This is an excellent policy. I wish we would follow it. The only thing terrorists understand is brute force, and I'm all for giving it to them.

"There is no substitute for victory."

I have often speculated on what the world would look like today had America reunified Korea and Vietnam rather than turning tail and running. And booted Castro out when that opportunity arose.

Would the other "little" embarrassing engagements (defeats) America has endured since WW II have ever happened had we but paid attention to General MacArthur's wise counsel and resolved to never desert the field of battle until total victory was achieved?

Paraphrasing the Union 76 ad: "You can either pay me now or pay me later. But it will cost a hellofalot more if you wait 'til later."

Excellent. I wish the Bush team were reading this, and not just us. Apocalyptic terrorists = armed vermin. The only point I disagree with is that these creeps "hide" behind their religion. I believe they are "imbedded" in their religion, they live it, breathe it, are brainwashed in it, psychotic in it. And this particular "religion" is from the pit of hell. The only way to deal with them - exterminate them completely.

Ralph Peters' 25 points of how to defeat terrorists:

9. When in doubt, hit harder than you think necessary. Success will be forgiven. Even the best-intentioned failure will not. ....Demonstrate power whenever you can. Show; don't tell!

10. Whenever legal conditions permit, kill terrorists on the spot (do not give them a chance to surrender, if you can help it). Contrary to academic wisdom, the surest way to make a martyr of a terrorist is to capture, convict and imprison him, leading to endless efforts by sympathizers to stage kidnappings, hijacking and other events intended to liberate the imprisoned terrorist(s). This is war, not law enforcement.

11. Never listen to those who warn that ferocity on our part reduces us to the level of the terrorists. That is the argument of the campus, not of the battlefield, and it insults America's service members and the American people. Historically, we have proven, time after time, that we can do a tough, dirty job for our country without any damage to our nation's moral fabric (Hiroshima and Nagasaki did not interfere with American democracy, values or behavior).

12. Spare and protect innocent civilians whenever possible, but: do not let the prospect of civilian casualties interfere with ultimate mission accomplishment. This is a fight to protect the American people, and we must do so whatever the cost, or the price in American lives may be devastating. In a choice between them, and us the choice is always us.

13. Do not allow the terrorists to hide behind religion. Apocalyptic terrorists cite religion as a justification for attacking us; in turn, we cannot let them hide behind religious holidays, taboos, strictures or even sacred terrain. We must establish a consistent reputation for relentless pursuit and destruction of those who kill our citizens. Until we do this, our hesitation will continue to strengthen our enemy's ranks and his resolve.

     Nailed It!

     Moral Clarity BUMP  !

I agree with the man. History bears him out completely. Unfortunately, our leaders seem uninterested. They seem convinced that technology has somehow changed human nature.

18. If the terrorists hide, strike what they hold dear, using clandestine means and, whenever possible, foreign agents to provoke them to break cover and react.

AND

24. In dealing with Islamic apocalyptic terrorists, remember that their most cherished symbols are fewer and far more vulnerable than are the West's. Ultimately, no potential target can be regarded as off-limits when the United States is threatened with mass casualties. Worry less about offending foreign sensibilities and more about protecting Americans.

I think I see where he is going with this.

But we are still at the stage of squeamishness.

Redrock,

This is extraordinary! Thanks to the General. I've looked at the usual internet bookstores, but cannot find the book entitled "When Devils Walk the Earth". Any ideas on where this can be found?

This should be read first thing every morning and last thing every night. Then go ahead and read (if you really must) the media's account of things.

This is almost apocolyptic in it's direction.

I sure hope President Bush has received a copy - perhaps the retired General wouldn't mind taking a crack at Sec. of State?
