Adam Shand Kydd, 49, arrived in the impoverished South-East Asian nation as a tourist on April 2 and was paying $1770 per month rent for a luxury home in the capital, Phnom Penh. $1770 per month for a place in Cambodia?? That had to be one heck of a mansion. The average income is $30 a month and $1770 is just about enough to rent a place for a year in most parts of Cambodia.

That whole area is a refuge for hippy drug addicts. If he was paying $1770 a month for rent alone, then I suspect he was what used to be called a "remittance man": a black-sheep member of an aristocratic family who is paid a monthly salary for staying out of the country as far as possible from his embarrassed relatives.

Pnom Penh? The ghosts in that place probably came for him and dragged him off. "You come with us, Mr. Decadent Eurotrash, we show you strange new high."
