Sometimes all it takes is one man with courage (and a good gun) to change the course of a battle...

Imagine how a company of good men would change these cities...

I saw a report last night on one of the cable channels that alluded to this. It's very interesting. Seems there is an Iraqi counter-insurgency going on, but nobody, including the US, seems to know who they are.

Is it just me or would that make on HELL of a movie?

'Course if Hollywood made it, he'd have to be shooting at American Troops brutalizing the Iraqi people.

Im sure there is some spcial forces that arent dressed up in fatigues and outwardly trying to "win the hearts and minds" as he hides in the shadows and slowly picks off fighters one by one and then joins the Najaf crowd 2 minutes later looking for his next position.

Well, I would really HOPE that this is true. One thing that really saddens me about the majority of the Iraqis over there is that they seem to be really apathetic about their "Freedom". I could understand some fears while Saddamned was around, but he is out of the picture now. I know that there are "some" Iraqis helping us, but if there are "many" helping us, the word isn't getting out, or I'm just not hearing about it. True Freedom always has a HUGE PriceTag! I wish more Iraqis would arise and take this Chance for freedom into their hearts. I dunno......maybe they are too afraid of displeasing allah....?????

There is apparently an Iraqi sniper operating in Najaf, killing al Sadr gunmen one by one. This, not surprisingly, has unnerved the al Sadr gangs, and caused them to act brutally towards Iraqis in attempts to find the mysterious sniper.

Men like these scare radical muslims and liberal wannabe-tyrants to death.

One man, one rifle and the courage to use it can change the world.

I love how this article assumes that it's a native Iraqi sniper.

If they can't find him, how do they know he's Iraqi? Maybe's he's American. Or French. Or, as Blondie would put it, the Man from Mars who eats Guitars.

Hmmmm, sounds like they need a couple more snipers to add to that one brave man. They need to be taking them out two at a time and then three at a time. Then they need to start noticing that dozens aren't showing up at the mosque. Maybe then they'll get the idea that they're not wanted.

Here's a link that goes back to a New York Times article that mentions these mysterious goings on in Najaf:

Take one good man, add lots of training on how to hide in an urban environment, plus some training on how to shoot (extreme precision is NOT required in most cities - 300 yards or less), mix in a good (does not need to be great) rifle, add a silencer and some time.

What you get is one terrifying weapon.

God bless the rough men who serve in far away places so that we can sleep safe.

In "Citizen Soldiers", Stephen Ambrose' book about the events shortly after D-Day, he describes how the US Army got lucky when an ordinary soldier from Georgia, carrying an M1 rifle, happened to stumble on a large group of German officers behind the lines who were directing a counter-attack from a motor pool. The soldier, a crack shot like Sgt. York, was able to shoot every officer in a matter of minutes, thus decapitating the German Army in the field, critically denying them the ability to respond to the push from the beaches.

He was making the point that the soldier had learned to handle a rifle when bird and deer hunting as a kid, not as a result of Army training. The US Army had a lot of soldiers like this guy in uniform then who could perform these kinds of feats on the spot as a matter of course. Yamamoto once said that invading America would be impossible because the Japanese Army would be facing a rifleman "behind every blade of grass".

How truly different we are today!

If our troops have the city surrounded, how can a sniper get in and out??? Something fishy here.
