Snakehead fish found in Maryland lake

Authorities plan to drain a Maryland lake after an angler caught a Northern snakehead, the same voracious nonnative fish that infested a pond only miles away in 2002.

State officials said the 19-inch fish, an Asian species that can wriggle on land for short distances and eats so many smaller fish it can destroy an ecosystem, was pulled out of Pine Lake in Wheaton Regional Park Monday afternoon.

The lake north of Washington, D.C., feeds a tributary of the Anacostia River, which empties into the Potomac River.

The snakehead was most likely dumped into the lake by its owner, Early said.

Why would anyone buy this fish?

I've heard it's something of a delicacy in Vietnam.

And draining the lake won't put any snakeheads into the river system?
What are they going to do with/to the water to eliminate all fry or eggs?

19 inches is a small one. In the wild they can get to 4 or 5 feet in length.

I had one about 10 years ago that was over 2 feet long and would eat up to a dozen goldfish a day.

Voracious little suckers they are, and they can indeed survive out of the water for quite some time. Mine used to knock the cover of the tank off and literally fly out onto the floor.

The last time he did it, I was on a 3 day camping trip and didn't find him until it was too late.

Poor little Toothy....

Authorities plan to drain a Maryland lake...

Maybe they'll find another snakehead-turtle-minnow trap.

Shameless plug for a review of Asian restaurants in Charlotte, including at least one Vietnamese place, Saigon Palace.
