The author was free to write what he wanted and the editorial board was free to reject the piece.
Nuff said

Journalists need to learn sooner or later that if not for warriors there would not be freedom of the press.

The school and the school paper should be ashamed!

I hope I never meet this A$$hole in person as I don't think I could control my temper. If I wasn't currently in the middle east I might take a trip up to UMASS and personally talk to this piece of trash.

I tried to be kind, he's a brain dead college student. Christ, I almost burned my draft card in the 60's before I grew a brain. I sent him the following:

Pat Tillman wasn't trying to be Rambo, he just loved his country. I understand that this is probably a foreign concept to you but what you don't see is that you've been brainwashed - and, pup, part of the process of your indoctrination is that you don't even know it's happened. In order for you to have a chance of figuring it out you're going to have to spend at least the next 12-15 years living in the real world trying to take care of yourself and those you are love and are responsible for.

By the by Rene, good luck getting a decent job outside of academia with a major in African-American Music and Jazz Studies. If you're not a competent musician you're going to have a bit of trouble earning a living. If you are, more power to you.

"War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things. The decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. The person who has nothing for which he is willing to fight, nothing which is more important than his own personal safety, is a miserable creature and has no chance of being free unless made and kept so by the exertions of better men than himself." --John Stuart Mill

Hope you grow up eventually

Here's another to go with yours from a time when Mass produced great men:

"If ye love wealth greater than liberty, the traquillity of servitude greater than the animating contest for freedom, go home from us in peace ( There are several flights a day back to PR). We seek not your counsel nor your arms. Crouch down and lick the hand that feeds you; and may posterity forget that ye were our countrym(a)n"

And yet, he's a grad student in your institution, President Wilson. Imagine that.

It is amazing what PhD candidates don't know sometimes.

A few years ago, I was at a symposium on the Vietnam War at Texas Tech. One of the visiting "scholars" was a PhD candidate in history at the University of New Mexico, a supposed specialist on the war.

It emerged during a conversation that this "expert" did not have the foggiest notion what the Republic of (South) Vietnam had been or who the ARVN were. So help me, this is true. His excuse was that his specialty was the antiwar movement. Presumably a knowledge of the most elementary facts wasn't necessary to a reasonable understanding of this phenomenon, just as an understanding of slavery has nothing to do with a study of Civil War copperheads or British colonial policy with the history of Revolution-era Loyalists.

Incidentally, a local hotel bellman, a veteran, had clued me to this guy's ignorance and I went out of my way to make a spectacle of him.

None other than Nguyen Van Thieu, last President of the RVN, happened to be there. I introduced the UNM "expert" to him and remarked, "Mr. President, this gentleman is a leading expert on the politics of the War. By the way, he had never heard of you before today."

Thieu was pretty amused and the UNM guy slunk away never to be seen again.

15 seconds would do the job, but a true artist takes his time with his work.

He should be called anal retentive now. I think the some of the editors probably agree with him somewhat, though they deny it.

This guy, Gonsleazes, needs to be sent to Afghanistan to get a little light shed on, or preferably through, him.

There is really no need to discuss this creep who thinks he is articulate and erudite. He won't change. He is typical of a large hunk of college kids who are equally arrogant and intellectually immature, not to mention lamentably uninformed.

True. Very true. If it takes too long though, and you enjoy it too much, what does that say?

Scare'em and Snap'em I say.

"There's a reason they're call massholes."

In this case, you would need to call him a Puerto Rico hole, or something more descriptive. He is from Puerto Rico, and never misses a moment to point it out.

I have had long (and I mean LONG) email discussions with him to demonstrate the error of his ways, but to no avail. I may post parts of them. He always thinks of soldiers and ROTC guys as "grunts" etc. America is "imperialistic." The insurgents in Iraq are right. Check out his past postings to different political articles/columns. He seeks to overwhelm with reams of nonsensical writing.

He is the perfect product of an ultraleft education, the kind so prevalent at Berkeley East.

I guess that for some people, sophomore year never stops.
