Age hasn't mellowed Joycelyn Elders, the former U.S. surgeon general who was purged from the Clinton administration for talking often and openly about sex education and the merits of masturbation as a tool in the fight against AIDS.
"You know, studies have shown that 70 percent of women masturbate, as do 90 percent of men," she said Monday afternoon, before meeting with students and faculty at Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.
"I've often said the rest of them are lying," said the 70-year-old Elders, chuckling at her frankness.
She later spoke at KU's Lied Center, a public appearance coordinated by Student Union Activities and Watkins Memorial Health Center.
Elders, the nation's first black surgeon general, said she bore no ill will toward Clinton for nudging her out of office.
"He did what he felt needed to do," she said. "He felt America was not ready for the aggressive approach I was taking in regard to saving the health and minds of our young people."
Though she praised Clinton for being a "very bright, very smart, very well-informed" president, she said his legacy would be tarnished by his extramarital activities.
"But I feel that part of his life was personal. It was Hillary's problem," she said. "If he'd been my husband, I would have pinched his head off and told God he'd died."
Joycelyn Elders talks with a group of Kansas University Medical Center faculty and students. Elders spoke Monday at the Med Center and Lied Center.
Elders was in Lawrence to give the first of the Canuteson Public Health Lecture series. The series is funded by the Ralph I. Canuteson Memorial Lectureship Fund through the KU School of Medicine. Canuteson was KU's first full-time director of student health services.
Elders was surgeon general from September 1993 to October 1994. She is a staunch advocate for universal health care.
"We have the greatest sick-care system in the world," she said. "The problem is, we don't have a health care system."
At the Med Center and Lied Center, Elders urged doctors to organize.
"We've been outdone by the lawyers," said Elders, a pediatrician. "In this country if you're a criminal, you have a right to an attorney. But access to health care is not a right. How can that be?"
Elders, now a retired distinguished professor living in Little Rock, Ark., said if she lived in Lawrence, she would support the proposed ban on smoking in public buildings.
"As long as you're in your own home, you have the right to do what you want -- and that includes smoking," she said. "But in a public facility, if you're smoking you're infringing on other people's right to a smoke-free environment."
About 120 people -- a mix of students, professors and health care professionals -- attended Elder's Lied Center appearance.

She taught Clinton how to use cigars for "safe sex."

people's right to a smoke-free environment Yup. That's in the Constitution. In the penumbra.

the merits of masturbation as a tool in the fight against AIDS. I'm sure just a few moments alone with themselves would curb any desire on the part of homosexuals to do the bone dance with Mr. Sphincter.

Yeah it's in the part that say's women have the right to kill unborn babies. But not in the part that says I can't own a gun or believe in God.

As mentally challenged as this wench was, most of Clinton's team was suspect of being as or more stupid. I can't believe the media let that three ring circus side who pass for brilliant, let alone normal.
To: wagglebee
She later spoke at KU's Lied Center How very appropriate!
To: JennysCool
Yeah I thought it was a misprint and should have said Clinton Lied Media Adoration Center.
To: wagglebee; sayfer bullets
She was also the idiot who said we could have 'safer bullets'.
If I was bleeding to death and she came to help, I'd crawl away from her as fast as I could.

"We can make safer weapons. We can make safer bullets."
"We start [sex education] kindergarten, and many people tell me we should start a birth."
"Most of the people that die with heart disease and cancer are our elderly population, and, you know, we all will probably die with something sooner or later. We've been investing in heart disease and cancer and I feel that we should continue...I'm not down playin' that. But, what I am saying is that we are losing the people that's going to pay my Social Security, and that bothers me." (this was testimony before a Congressional Committee)
"When you're dancin' with a bear we all know that you can't get tired and sit down. You have to wait until the bear gets tired, and then, you sit down."
To: BenLurkin
oh yeah...I had forgotten that one. Didn't she say she would declare herself the condom queen and wear a crown made of condoms? I forget that exact quote.
To: wagglebee
But access to health care is not a right. How can that be?" I believe access to health care is a right. And since no one is being denied access what's the problem? Take your hand out of your panties for a minute, Joycelyn. Let some blood go to your brain for a while.

"When you're dancin' with a bear we all know that you can't get tired and sit down. You have to wait until the bear gets tired, and then, you sit down." I'm pretty sure she was talking about "alone time" with Billy here.

"If he'd been my husband, I would have pinched his head off and told God he'd died."Well, even a blind pig finds an acorn once in a while...

I think they could make a ton of money if Hillary did this on pay-per-view.

Those are great quotes. She always reminded me of Maya Angelou on painkillers and spanish fly.
