They call it the Peoples Republic of Santa Monica.
Partly due to the politics & partly due to the huge russian population.

Yes, we have lots of hippies here....aging hippies....nothing sadder to see than that....but the bright side is that Jerry Rubin has tried to run for office a few times & cannot get elected.

No, we don't elect our mayor & I have no idea why.
Back when SM still put on the annual Constitution Day parade, the girls know known as The Liberty Belles marched in front of the ACLU. I have to tell you how funny that was....talking to the ACLU folks & asking why they don't defend all civil liberties. I was marching for the second amendment with my pitbull. We had about 25 folks with our group that day & everyone carried an American flag.
