Since "Free Republic is an online gathering place for independent, grass-roots conservatism on the web. We're working to roll back decades of governmental largesse, to root out political fraud and corruption, and to champion causes which further conservatism in America.", I and others think it's a good idea to centralize what the goes on in the Senate (or House if it gets hot).
So if you see something happening on the Senate/House floor and you don't want to start a new thread to ask if anyone else just heard what you heard, you can leave a short note on who said what and about what and I'll try and find it the next day in THE RECORD. Or if you see a thread that pertains to the Senate, House, or pretty much any GOV'T agency please link your thread here.
If you have any suggestions for this thread please feel free to let me know.
Here's a few helpful links.
C-SPAN what a great thing. Where you can watch or listen live to most Government happenings.
C-SPAN 1 carries the HOUSE.
C-SPAN 2 carries the SENATE.
C-SPAN 3 (most places web only) carries a variety of committee meetings live or other past programming.
OR FEDNET has online feed also.
A great thing about our Government is they make it really easy for the public to research what the Politicians are doing and saying (on the floor anyway).
THOMAS where you can see a RECORD of what Congress is doing each day. You can also search/read a verbatim text of what each Congressmen/women or Senator has said on the floor or submitted 'for the record.' [This is where the real juicy stuff can be found.]
Also found at Thomas are Monthly Calendars for the Majority and Minority
Roll Call Votes can be found here.
THE WAR DEPARTMENT (aka The Dept. of Defense)
Saying he wanted to appear on O'Reilly's show to defend George Soro's but O'Reilly won't return his calls

More than a century ago, Teddy Roosevelt defined American leadership in foreign policy. He said America should walk softly and carry a big stick.
Intentional on Kerry's part???
Seems Kerry has a big habit of copying other peoples speeches
This provided the infantrymen an opportunity to conduct patrols in a mountainous residential area where interaction with the local population was inevitable.
This exercise was one of the final training evolutions during TRUEX before the Marines headed back to Camp Lejeune, N.C., and prepare for their deployment later this summer.
I know our troops need to be trained, but this makes it look like their training for Martial Law.
I hope the town OK'd this.
Does Posse Comitatus come in to pay here?
I can't even imagine what DU'ers would do w/ this story.
If we (God forbid) do get hit really hard by another terrorist attack .. there may be a Martial Law in place
We all need to be prepared for any and all possibilities
I too think ML might be placed upon us if something terrible happens in the future, but I'd rather see a citizen Militia form in order to protect their towns.
Maybe even work in concert w/ the Military.
Do you remember the aftermath of Hurrican Andrew in South Maimi?
There was "martial law" there but armed citizens had to defend themselves from looting. (the pre-FR/internet picture of the little miami kid holding the street sweeper is still priceless)
I agree, it is uncomfortable but this should be paired with OFFERING citizens the opportunity for training on how to protect their home when there is no available communications or police protection. The military are not police.
Not realy I was up in IL then.
I'd like to see that pic if you got it.
The picture is pre-internet from August of 1992.
South Dade countey was erased. Pictures could not do it justice. The devastation was near complete. No traffic signs, no wire polls, no water, just nothing. Some homes were just plain gone with others roofless shells.
(no wather meant no bathrooms) The local authorities were focused on keeping some order and this left the homes to fend for themselves. No telephone and no cell towers. Even with national guard and police, you were on your own security wise.
Regarding for oil for food. Would we get more milage on the Oil For Food scandal by promising to help cover the humiliation of Cofi/UN? Just a thought.
I would rather vote for exposing all, but I can see the advantages of the other concept.

LOL! A caller on WJ just called to thank Marcy Kaptur(D-OH) for her efforts on behalf of the WWII Memorial, but had to then smack her down on her leftist politics! Just before his call she said that we had "an economy teetering on recession", which he instantly refuted with the 4.4% growth figure. I'm not sure if it was also him, but she was also taken to task about how if she had voted to open ANWR in '97, we would be getting the oil today. Her response was to say we have to save that oil in the ground for the future when we will really need it because we are such a "wasteful country" and besides it's only a years worth anyway. :-/
