A signal aboard an inbound Singapore Airlines Airbus A340-500 indicated a possible hijacking. An F-16 Fighting Falcon escorted the passenger plane to a remote section of Los Angeles International Airport where it landed around 5:30 p.m. Monday.
Armed SWAT teams immediately stormed the aircraft as hostage negotiators rushed to the scene.
Within minutes, officials determined a transponder sending a hijacking alert to ground crews had malfunctioned. The concerns about a hijacking aboard the Airbus thus ended in relief.
The Airbus had 126 passengers and 18 crew members aboard.

unless they plan on flying to athens next.

I wonder who's behind that? IIRC, they have their own homegrown terrorists.

In our story today, Captain Fong discovers that squawking 7500 "just for the heck of it" is frowned upon by the United States Air Force...

I can understand why there is no light or tone in the cockpit to indicate the squawker is on, but why no signal in the pilot's earphone? a tone or something. This could get really exciting otherwise...

I hate it when that happens. Reminds me of a time when I was flying into Dulles.....

it's Bush's fault, he was supposed to have all them fixed.

This could get really exciting otherwise... The "squawker" is always on. Normally it sends (in reply to "interrogations" from ground or airborne "radars") a code assigned to that particular aircraft, but it can send various special codes as well, such as "Hijack", "Radio Out", or "Emergency". As another poster mentioned, "Hijack" is code 7500, Emergency is 7700, "Radio Out" is 7600. Code 1200 means that the aircraft has not been assigned a code and is operating under visual flight rules.

The 'squawk' is an electronic code sent to the ground, not ever an aubible one.
