Ultimately, population is stabilised one way or another -- either by fewer births or more deaths. Thus, whining that we need perpetual population growth is like whining that we need perpetual motion machines: both are fundamentally impossible according to the basic laws of the universe, and the only available recourse is to figure out an alternative that does not require them.
Fortunately, economic growth is not dependent on sheer number of warm bodies (a fact that ought to be obvious to anybody who recognizes the fallacies in the Marxist labor theory of value).
