Thanks to you and others for all the replies. The second part of my question is: does law enforcement have the capability to search a database or databases of ALL known prints on record, for whatever reason? I guess it does, but such a search must require a supercomputer or two to get timely results.

One possibility to answer your (darn fine) questions:

Maybe the 'sleeper cell' members number many fewer than previously thought. While this particular n'er-do-well may have indeed been operating in the U.S., finding him in Spain would suggest to me that either (a) he was needed to help out since they had nobody else; or (b) he was a supervisor and was providing approval, expertise, and oversight on the operation.

In either case, the FBI seems to be all over this one -- and I really like your point about phone calls and contacts. This could really be hugh.

Here is the latest on this thanks to a heads up by Shermy:

Her stepson went into the Army right after he graduated from high school, "because he felt that was the right thing to do," she said, and was posted overseas in Germany.

Mayfield met his Egyptian-born wife, Mona, while stationed near Tacoma, Wash., at Fort Lewis. Records from Washoe County, Nev., show the two were married in 1998. Mayfield converted to Islam after marriage, Alexander said.

Mayfield, who is 37, comes from a family of non-church-goers, Alexander told The Associated Press.

"When they started having children, he thought they should have some religion to have the family focus on," she said.

Leaders at the Bilal Mosque in Beaverton, Ore., said he would show up regularly for prayer on Fridays, and that he helped congregants who needed legal advice.

Depends on the meaning of Law Enforcement and All.
States share with the Feds, Feds make data available to the states. Ever hear of NCIC? It's hugh and series.

Yep. Long stairway, minister, hood, rope, Pat Hingle nods his head, pull the lever, snap C-4, good night now.

Except, of course, when the ATCLU inevitably steps in. (Wild guess at what the "T" stands for...)

Public stoning would be too good for this piece of human debris...

He's listed as an "immigration attorney" -- I wonder how many sleeper cells we have due to his efforts.

Lots of them. And the politicians in both parties want to grant them amnesty, cost free tuition, and give them the vote.

I guess when all you've got is fear you may be one, everyone else looks like a queer.

Fascinating. Has there been any explaination as to how his finger prints ended up on the items in Spain?

Not yet.

He will probably claim that the Mosque handed out food for poor Islamos in those bags, and he helped to bag the food.

Ten years ago...he could have done the same offense and just walked away with no worry. He has to be sitting in a cell now, and wondering how the US government will handle his extradition to Spain

Someone should start checking this guy's whereabouts during the Oklahoma City Bombing....

I heard on the noon news that he met and married his wife while stationed in the army in Washington state. I don't know where she is from. His mother was on the news blasting the Patriot Act/Big Brother.
