Civics lesson for students goes awry

MIX-UP: The Fontana group came to hear Kerry, but were shunted to GOP demonstration.

An intended civics lesson turned into a lesson in frustration Thursday for a group that traveled from Fontana High School to hear presumptive Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry speak at Colton High School.

As the students were waiting to enter the auditorium, a representative from the office of Rep. Joe Baca, D-Rialto, whisked the students to the front of the school, where a group of Republicans were protesting Kerry's visit.

Mark Shepherd with Baca's office said he had been told the students were part of a Young Republicans organization, which the students denied. Despite their denial, the students were not allowed into the auditorium.

Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry chats with Jennifer Baca, 17, after she sang to him during a campaign stop at Colton High School. Baca's father, Rep. Joe Baca, D-Rialto, is at center.

Fontana High School teacher Jeff Griffith - who says he told a Baca staffer the students were with him on a field trip - said he watched them walk away and believed they were being taken to a special entrance where students would greet Kerry.

Griffith went inside the auditorium and saved five seats for his students. When others filed in and sat in nearby rows, he realized something was amiss and went to look for his students.

He said the students couldn't get back into the auditorium after being escorted off campus and having their tickets taken away. Griffith found them snacking at a nearby fast-food restaurant. The teacher said he probably shouldn't have let them out of his sight, but he figured the congressman's representative was in authority.

The senator was late for his speech, so Griffith had time to return with the students and explain the situation to an event organizer. They received new passes and entered the auditorium in time to hear Kerry's speech about education.

Griffith said he is angry his students were led off campus without his knowledge.

"They didn't miss it, but it was the distress or the embarrassment that went before it that was entirely unnecessary," Griffith said. "It was offensive to me and it was offensive to the students."

Reporter Michelle DeArmond contributed to this report.

Catch that "related?" Kerry offers $30 million for schools, but if you look like a Republican you might not get to hear about it.

Hey, there's an idea! Find the biggest busload headed for a Kerry rally, sneak a Bush sign on it, tell the security folks that they are Republicans or FReepers and watch the fun!

...to hear presumptive Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry speak at Colton High School...

A high school is a public venue. A Republican is part of the public. To deny access has to be breaking some law or another!

Actually, Kerry let the kids in before he didn't let the kids in.

Oh, and the security detail wasn't his, it actually belonged to his family.

Oh, and when he said the kids weren't allowed in, it was just the sort of thing a young man in his fifties might say, and has nothing to do with his current thought processes.

Oh, and stop questioning his patriotism for chrissakes.

Did he throw the kids on the steps before or after he didn't throw the kids on the steps and were they his kids or did he borrow the kids from somewhere else?
