I know the area. I know it very well. The road they were caught on is a narrow, winding road that climbs up to Sam's Gap (Elevation 3723 feet), then descends on the Tennessee side through a series of nasty, steep hairpin turns. This road roughly parallels Interstate 26. NO ONE drives the old road anymore, unless you live in one of the few moutain homes up in the gap. These guys were TRYING to avoid detection...the question is "Why?" Remember...they are NOT co-operating with authorities.

I think my family drove that road back in the 1960's on our way to visit grandparents in FLA. This was, of course, before the interstates were completed.
