WASHINGTON (AFP) - Pentagon (news - web sites) employees gave US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld a standing ovation at a meeting at which he said the scandal over abuse of Iraqi prisoners should not be allowed to define the way the US military is seen by the world.
The audience at a Pentagon auditorium rose to their feet in applause after General Peter Pace, vice chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, urged them to thank Rumsfeld for his leadership.
"There is not a single human being in this government and certainly not in this building who works harder or is more dedicated or is a better patriot than is Secretary Rumsfeld," Pace said.
Rumsfeld acknowledged the damage to US reputation caused by the abuses committed by military police at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad.
"It is a body blow when we find that we have -- as we have in past week or so to date -- a few who have betrayed our values by their conduct," Rumsfeld said.
"As Pete Pace can tell you, the look on the face of the people who have viewed the photographs and the videos of what took place there, they were stunned, absolutely stunned, that any Americans wearing the uniform could do what they did," he said.
Rumsfeld said US leaders were "heartsick" for those who were abuses and for the cost to the reputation of the US Defense Department "as a force for good in the world."
"And I know I speak for everybody when I say those acts really ought not be allowed to define us," he said.

Ted Kennedy is not amused. He will probably be offering the people who gave the standing ovation, a ride in a 69 Oldsmobile.

Maybe we should send Kennedy a nice bottle of Jack Daniels and say here knock yourself out and then take a nice long drive off a short pier!

At this point, continuing to go after Rumsfeld is counter productive to the Democrats.
Fortunately, they aren't the sharpest political tools in the shed, as the selection of the French Candidate demonstrates.

Did they clear that ovation with the Civil Servants Employees Assoication? Was there pressure on the employees to participate? We need an investigation. Remember: Scandal - Investigate - Poll - Repeat.

Ted Kennedy is not amusedDems should have to run a disclaimer in their ads: "No interns were drowned or molested during the filming of this advertisement"

At this point, continuing to go after Rumsfeld is counter productive to the Democrats. This is correct. Nader and Bush could go after Kerry's admitted war atrocities he said he committed. This and his words in '71 is an Achilles heel for him.

Strange thing just happened. I was on c-span.com right after I read this post and the link to this video was right there.
I decided to watch it, but I answered a freepmail first. I just looked at the site again and that link is GONE.
Surely it wouldn't be removed because someone didn't like the standing ovation?

LOL. No, this is directly off of the c-span site.
I can play any of the other videos on the site, but the link for this one is gone now.
It doesn't have anything to do with FR., but thanks.
Maybe they had trouble getting it to work right and they are tweaking it.
It just seemed weird. Now you see it, now you don't!
