Cities across Spain are commemorating the centenary of the birth of Spanish surrealist artist, Salvador Dali. Dali's birthplace, the town of Figueres, near Barcelona, is holding a commemorative concert, staging theatre productions. There is even a giant size postage stamp designed in his honour. To celebrate the centenary of Dali's birth, the town's bakeries are serving up the artist's favourite food - bread with wine and sugar. Salvador Dali, who died in 1989, is regarded as one of the most popular artists of all time. His birthday, May 11, has kicked off dozens of Dali inspired exhibitions, conferences and theatre shows all over Spain.

I remember when Dali was dying, my wife read me the breaking news "...doctors said Dali appeared near death...".

I told her "maybe they ought to step back and close one eye". Pretty funny, huh?
