Statement on John Kerry's Missed Vote
George W. Bush ^ | May 11, 2004

Posted on 05/13/2004 7:22:53 PM PDT by RWR8189

"Last month, John Kerry was pushing for the extension of unemployment benefits. Today he had the chance to actually vote on that question but was too busy playing politics when he would have made the difference in the Senate. John Kerry's rhetoric on the campaign trail is hiding a long list of missed votes and empty promises on the issues he claims are priorities."

-Steve Schmidt, Bush-Cheney '04 Spokesman

Gimmick. If Kerry had been there another republican would have flipped his vote. This was contrived to create a soundbite.

Actually, this could be the start of a Kerry campaign to promise smaller government. "If we don't show up and vote, nothing will get done and life in America will improve!"

hard to disagree with that logic.

Except that Kerry criticizes Bush incessantly for not "showing up!"

And in any case, he's not running for Senator or even UN Ambassador. He is running for President. The President does not legislate; he leads. Senators don't have to lead.

I would have thought he said

"I showed up to vote before I didn't show up to vote!"
"You peons are not nuanced enough to understand that!"

Yes it was contrived, and it means nothing. But these operatives are paid to put it all out. They are simply doing their job.

I think it's hilarious as do most Bush supporters.I guess it's not to a Kerry supporter-right? After all of the nasty and untrue things the braying donkey party has tried to President Bush and now they dare to complain about this?!

This is just one more example of why your boy John is unfit.

He pushes this, criticizes the President and then doesn't show up to vote. Causing this bill to fail.

He's the biggest fool in politics.

He's not my boy. I'm not voting for anyone who will pledge to raise taxes. It simply won't happen.

He pushes this, criticizes the President and then doesn't show up to vote. Causing this bill to fail. He's the biggest fool in politics.

You do understand this was a contrived (meaning deliberately staged) event, don't you? I'm not saying I'm in favor of extending the unemployment benefits, I'm simply making sure you understand that if Kerry had been there, another Republican would have voted against it. However, given that he is campaigning, they had this opportunity. If they really want to pass the measure, they could bring it up again when he is there. Do you think that will happen? It's not important, it's just stagecraft for a soundbite coming soon to a tv near you.
