Al Asad, Iraq (May 14, 2004) -- Ammar Aloba Idi of Jooba, and Sevan Lousinian, Department of Defense Arabic translator, presented the pilot edition of The Voice of the Euphrates, the first independent newspaper for the local region, to Maj. Gen. James F. Amos, commanding general, 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing, here May 13.

"For 35 years, Saddam teach people, in school and television, to deal with United States as enemy," said Aloba Idi. "This will take a lot of time - to change people's mind.
"There is no censorship of the paper...This is history in the making."

Currently, the primary source.. is the Al Jazeera network and word of mouth, according to Lousinian.

Aloba Idi was not completely prepared for the reception of the paper. The 3,000 copies of the first edition...was distributed in days, and still people requested more.

Notice the words Muslim and Islam do not appear at all in this story.

Great story - unfortunately we don't have a lot of time because the elite (so educated they forget history completely!) think all is lost already! Idiots.

I bet the U.S. media just can't wait to spread this story and embrace these entrepreneurs as fellow journalists.

Great Story, hope the paper continues. The Anti Coalition forces will be looking for a way to shut it down.

Stories like this should be kept on the D-L, just as matter of safety. However, I do admire the courage of this man's convictions. Hopefully, he'll be able to celebrate the anniversary of his paper in a year's time.

I wish them much success.

They should auction a few signed copies on eBay.

Don't you just love the leftist media whores constant use lately on "holy" "sacred" etc when describing where our troops are or where they attacked.

That is just another propaganda technique to not-so subtlety make our military and our country look bad.

Looks like a very nice, professional newspaper. Imagine, their very first free enterprise paper in 35 years.

"There is no censorship of the paper," said Thorsby, whose office was instrumental in getting the paper off the ground. "This is history in the making."

Staffers Quit at U.S.-Backed Paper

We thought that the Americans were here to create a free media," Ismael Zayer, who had been editor-in-chief, said in an interview. "Instead, we were being suffocated."

------

"(The Marines) told me that I can write anything in the paper. 'If you want to write about something that is wrong that happens, you can write about it.' They told me," said Aloba Idi. "Even if is Marines or government - that is democracy."

Well if you say so Aloba...

Heck- CBS didn't go public until they (and DOD) learned the story was international!. So much for our "free media".
