"Old time natives of Floyd County, Virginia pronounced the verb wash, as "warsh". In addition, the word, "it", was pronounced "hit". They also referred to "rinse", as "rinch", or "wrench". I've heard older people native to Bath County, VA use the same pronounciation."
I heard those from old-timers in Henry County, VA, in the 50's. There, the past tense of "dream" was "dreamt"; when someone got killed in an accident, he "got deaded".

One of my favorites is "he's a mess!" usually said with tolerant laughter, meaning the person so described is a cut-up, funny or michievious.

That's a common way to politely thank someone for a compliment, such as,
"Your son is so polite and smart,"
Proper reply is "Oh, he's a mess," with a smile.

y'all IS plural. It refers to a group of people. Any other usage (as in a Yankee gal on TV using a pretend Southern accent to say "you all" when referring to one person) is silly and not real. You are so, so right on that one!
BTW, when I was in seminary - in N'awlins, no less - in my Hebrew classes, I always, always translated the "second person plural" as "y'all."
My professor didn't like it very much, but what could he do? After all, it was grammatically correct!

To: WVNan
True!!
I am from Alabama and can tell what state or area someones from just from their accent.
To: OldBlondBabe
Here in North Alabama it is an old Southern word used by the Hillbillies.
There are and were a lot of Southern people who moved up North and settled. Maybe shes from some of them.
To: arthurus
True. Ever time I come back home to the Southland from up North or West I thank my lucky Stars that the Good Lord Blessed me by being from the South.
