DEL CITY -- An 8-year-old boy overdosed at school, reportedly on 25 Ritalin pills.
Dakota Loflin was transported to a local hospital. His doctor said it could take three days for the medication to wear off. The boy's mother said on the last day of school, which was Tuesday, the school secretary sent Dakota home with the bottle of Ritalin and he ate all of them.
Doctors are waiting to see if there is permanent damage.

Stinkin' goddam flack. Where was the school NURSE? Kids aren't allowed to have as much as a aspirin in school, and this Democrat gives him the whole BOTTLE?!?
I hate to say it...but if my parents named me "Dakota" and I had to endure all of the jokes I would overdose too!
I take it this school does NOT have a zero tolerance drug policy?? Some schools have expelled students for having tylenol or asthma inhalers. Keeping kids stoned to avoid behavior problems is an exception???
Gees, This is sick. What the hell are they doing giving bottles of these types of medications to children? The person that gave this bottle of Ritalin to this child should be charged/sued for endangering the life of the child.
Not to the child, as one might surmise ... but to the 'Keep American Kids Doped and Stupid' program the 'compassionate' commies have had in place since ... when? Early seventies?
My son, The Boy, is taking Straterra for his ADHD. Almost a water pill compared to that garbage, Ritalin.
The Boy is starting parochial school in the fall, thanks in part to the PROPER meds for a 6yo.
Ritalin should NEVER be in schools for kids this age, and NEVER without the RN monitoring the stuff.
You'll notice that the symptoms for being AD or hyper active pretty well correspond to being a boy so they really deal out such drugs to many children who don't need them. Thus the child never develops through a phase but does learn that pills are the solution to life's problems.
Dakota seems to be a very popular name amongst the Ritalin crowd...
Ping
This kid must be bouncing off the walls. Ritalin is a stimulant.
I say give the kid a broom, mop and duster and let him go! The whole western hemispere should be spotless by the weekend.
Ahhhhh, I remember the days when the hyper kids were just that - hyper kids. Now everybody has a "disorder" or "disease".
Sheesh. A child that age is old enough to know better. It is notable that a doctor's office is not allowed to give the piece of paper with the prescription written on it to a child much less an adult who does not have proper id. this is true for all narcotics, I believe.
I have trouble getting my older children to take pills of any variety. (benadryl, tylenol, advil, etc.)
Believe that it works in reverse for ADD and, in fact, calms the child so s/he can focus.
No, I understand that. I'm just not sure 25 of them are going to going to be calming, ADD or not. That's a lot of stimulation!!
MMMM Flintsone Chewables.
I ate a quarter of a bottle's worth back in the '60's. I loved the taste of those things. I peed funky colors for 3 days.
Well if the vitamins had iron in them you would have been in deep doo-doo... that funny color you urinated might have meant that you came a lot closer than you know to accidentally hurting yourself. In Medical toxicology look up the signs and symptoms of iron toxicity.
glad that you turned out OK.... I think... (smiling)
I've got 4 kids and have found that only very rarely would I classify one of their classmates or friends as having a behavioral disorder that would require medical intervention.
I'd always look at parenting skills, setting limits, spending time with your kid, possibly looking at dietary stimulants or allergies that may contribute to "abnormal" behavior, before I'd subject a kid to the long term experimental trial of medications that we still don't know how they will affect patients in the 20-30 year range.
How long does someone stay on Ritalin, Stratera, etc..... I've seen marketing for "Adult ADD"... nice excuse for stimulants in the workplace. I'm almost coming to the conclusion that we should legalize it all and let the chips fall where they may. Unfortunately I've seen the devastation that "recreational" drug use leaves in its wake and that would devastate this country.
