At The Today Show, the Abu Ghraib-a-thon Goes on, as Katie Frets Kerry Overshadowed
The Today Show

Posted on 05/21/2004 4:32:12 AM PDT by governsleastgovernsbest

Somewhere, perhaps in France, Jerry Lewis is green with envy. His telethons last a mere 24 hours. But every morning, Today sets a new world record for its continuing Abu Ghraib-a-thon.

Dutiful soldiers in the liberal army that they are, Matt and Katie were at their posts again today.

Matt led with an interview with a Washington Post journalist. The Post has obtained additional abuse photos and paraded its findings in a front page above-the-fold story this morning. Blah, blah, blah, cue the hand-wringing.

Then it was on to Katie's interview with Tim Russert.

Asked Katie, fingers crossed: "What will be the political impact be of the new photos and videotape?"

Replied Russert with grim face firmly in place: "This continues the very bad political problems for the Bush administration. The new photos will have 'an enormously powerful effect on the American people.' Something has gone terribly wrong."

Katie is never better than when she is offering "helpful" advice to Republicans. "Instead of drip, drip, drip wouldn't it be better to get all this out?"

Russert: "That is the view of John McCain and Lindsey Graham. Yes, it would give us a higher moral authority."

Katie is clearly impatient and concerned that the taint hasn't reached high enough. "There have been congressional hearings, a parade of generals, Sec. Rumsfeld. All have insisted this is limited to a group of rogue soldiers. When will the American people know just how high this gows? It seems the animus toward the US is growing daily. Isn't time of the essence?"

Russert 'sagely' observed that Abu Ghraib has become "A metaphor for the mismanagement of the war."

Referring to W's meeting with congressional Republicans yesterday, Katie asked "did Pres. Bush smooth any ruffled feathers or reassure congressional leaders?"

Russert implied the meeting was a failure: "Deep down there is a lot of anxiety. These pictures are just devastating."

With echoes of Carole Simpson's taunting referral to Pres. Bush I as the "education president," Katie then asked, butter not melting in her mouth: "Is the Bush campaign rethinking the strategy of running the President as a war President in view of all the bad news coming out of Iraq?"

Nope, said Russert.

The most telling moment came at the very end.

Katie asked: "Has John Kerry been overshadowed [by all the Abu Ghraib news]?" She then clearly was beginning to ask "How," and then at the last second caught herself and rephrased her question "Is he breaking through?"

In other words, Katie's instinct was to ask "how can Kerry break through?" as if she were a campaign adviser or at the least the avid supporter that she is.

She might have thought she covered her tracks, but the merciless eye of Free Republic sees all, tells all!

don't Kerry's numbers go up the less people see of him?

If it weren't such torture, the RNC should run 10 minutes of Kerry stump speeches. At the end of each segment, ask two questions: What did he say???? Now, would you really want him as your President???

I wonder whether Kerry will ramble meaninglessly in the debates or whether the 'questions' will be asked in such as way as to 'insulate' Kerry.

I can hardly wait for the Wednesday morning program after the election.
Miss Katie will have tears in her eyes.
They will be asking? How did this happen?
They won't figure it out.
We will all be chuckling, thinking how well our VRWC plan worked. A lot of RATS fell for our "Rats vote on Wednesday plan".

Those 'news' programs have moved so far left that they are now by definition, propaganda. I guess if someone held a gun to my head I would watch them.

The new photos will have 'an enormously powerful effect on the American people.'

Timmy might be underestimating the intelligence of the American people. The "new" photos are not new. They show the same group of idiots, just in different poses. Perhaps the American people will finally rise up and say "Enough. We've seen this weeks ago. Why do you keep playing the same tape, over and over?"

My sense is that this has already happened, and that the liberal media is incensed that the story has not been more harmful to W.

Graham has been doing his own grandstanding, so he is hardly credible; otherwise, TimmyR wouldn't be 'sourcing' Lindsay, would he.

Chris Wallace just mentioned that on Sunday .. Hellary and Graham will be on his show regarding the prison

Lindsey best be careful ... Hellary hasn't forgotten his hand in the impeachment of her hubby

When will the American people know just how high this gows?

IMHO the American people don't give a rat's rear end how high it goes. The American people should be glad that we have people in place that will do what is necessary even if politically incorrect to provide force protection for our troops and to diminish threats to our homeland.
Skin them alive if that's what it takes to root out the murdering savages.

It seems the animus toward the US is growing daily.

Exactly whose animus are you concerned about, Katie, that of the radical Muslims and your rabid liberal fellow travelers?

Isn't time of the essence?"

Yes, time is of essence Katie. It is high time you shut your pie hole and stop propagating hatred toward our troops. Your journalistic assault is no better than the roadside bombs, car bombs and ambushes on our brave soldiers. When you and your ilk cast aspersions on our troops, you are maligning our nation's sons and daughters and I am one American that is getting sick and tired of you and your kind who aid and abet our enemies.

I watched Imus discuss Rumsfield's "arrogance" with Frank Rich....(Two reasons for the claim..he called himself a "survivor" in front of the troops ....and did not watch 60 Minutes 11..(Therefore he has no idea what we, the people, see and are thinking). This "people" missed it, too.

Any one who had heard the pundits, the politicians and the hearings thought the "survivor" comment was appropriate and the media can't stand to think they are not the center of every Presidencial and Cabinet members' thinking....Frank Rich discussing "arrogance" is such fun./s

Absolutely correct! Thanks for your reviews

It's been intersting watching how Russert gave up his moderate position in the last 6 months. I used to watch him but he has jumped onto the liberal wagon and is falling off the side of the earth.....
