Isn't that interesting? I wonder why the hush-hush treatment, given that they made such a flap over this thing when it broke.

I am going to keep an eye out for further developments, as I really, really think there is something else going on.

Normally when journalists are subpeonaed for sources they do the "righteous indigination routine" and all of their fellow media jackals provide covering press; however, that's not how it's panning out.

Google results as of 1pm est 5/22:

Tim+Russert+Matt+Cooper+Subpoenaed 1 result

Russert+Cooper+Subpoenaed 4 results

They only become interested when Karl Rove or Scooter Libby's name is brought up

Well, Mandy's marriage stuck in my head because I thought at the time "I guess there's someone for everyone" (did I just say that out loud? oops).

Plus her groom's last name...

;)

I think we should start a "Beltway Marriages" data file.

Here are the ones I know:

Mandy Grunwald (Clintonista) and Matt Cooper (Time Magazine)
Andrea Mitchell (NBC) and Alan Greenspan (Federal Reserve Bank)
Jamie Rubin(former State Department Clintonista) and Christiane Amanpour(CNN war slut)
Valerie Plame(CIA) and Joseph Wilson (Clintonista ambassador and Kerry advisor)
Judy Woodruff (CNN) and Al Hunt (Wall Street Journal

I am sure that I know more, but am drawing a blank right now. Anyone can add to the list. There are a lot more, I am sure.

One of my favorite hobnobbing mixers is Linda Douglass of ABC news and her husband being best friends (at least once upon a time) with Web Hubbel and his wife! Vacationed together and everything.

When I think of the outcry that Susan Molinari had to endure when she quit Congress to host that CBS Saturday morning show and the media went nuts over how could she be expected to be "fair" I could SCREAM!

I'll laugh at them instead. Clymers! LOL

Reporters Subpoenaed in CIA Leak (Excerpted with link below)

By Susan Schmidt
Washington Post Staff Writer
Saturday, May 22, 2004; Page A11

Journalists at Time magazine and NBC News were subpoenaed yesterday to appear before a federal grand jury investigating whether administration officials illegally leaked the name of an undercover CIA officer last summer.

Tim Russert, host of NBC's "Meet the Press," and Time reporter Matthew Cooper were subpoenaed by special prosecutor Patrick J. Fitzgerald. NBC said in a statement that it would fight the subpoena, as did a lawyer for Time.

"Time Inc.'s policy is to protect confidential sources," said Robin Bierstedt, deputy general counsel for the magazine.

Bierstedt said the prosecutors asked Time a week ago to cooperate but the magazine declined to do so. She said Fitzgerald wants to question Cooper about a story that appeared in Time on July 21, 2003, and another that ran on Time's Web site on July 17.

SNIP

Under federal law, it is a crime to reveal a covert officer's identity if it is done with the intention of exposing the officer's undercover status.

This is off topic from Wilson and Plame, but I wanted to buttress my Linda Douglass story and I googled and found this. Just for all of our information:

ABC's of Helping Hubbell

Former CBS News Washington correspondent Linda Douglass, now with ABC News, had a very unusual relationship with convicted embezzler Webster Hubbell: She and her husband John Phillips were close friends with Hubbell and his wife Suzy. In the May American Spectator, Byron York revealed that Phillips arranged for a consulting deal to cushion Hubbell, that Douglass and her husband paid for the Hubbells to join them on a Greek vacation and that Hubbell talked on the phone to Douglass from prison.

Douglass, a long-time Los Angeles television reporter, and her lawyer husband are old friends with Clinton buddy Mickey Kantor. While working on the 1992 campaign Kantor invited Douglass and Phillips to Little Rock where they met the Hubbells. In January 1993, York reported, they moved to Washington where Douglass landed a position with CBS News. The couple began having Kantor and Hubbell, whose wives remained in Arkansas, over for dinner. When their spouses arrived they joined in the frequent gatherings.

~snip~

There's more at link. I didn't remember the Kantor connection. Well, it's off-topic, but Linda D. still reports for ABC, I believe.

I have to go. Friend having a "purse party" (I don't want to go). Y'all have a great day.

The special prosecutor investigating whether the Bush administration illegally disclosed a CIA operative's name to the media has subpoenaed NBC correspondent Tim Russert and a Time magazine reporter, seeking information about the leak.

Special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald issued the subpoenas late yesterday, according to the media outlets. His spokesman, Randall Samborn, had no comment.

An NBC statement released last night confirmed Washington bureau chief Russert had received a subpoena to testify before a special grand jury investigating the leak, which disclosed the identity of Valerie Plame and her CIA association.

"NBC News is resisting the subpoena because of the potential chilling effect on its ability to report the news," the statement said. "The American public will be deprived of important information if the government can freely question journalists about their efforts to gather news."

Thanks! I couldn' remember Mrs. Matthews name or affiliation, but I did remember she was in news. Perhaps we should have a seaparate thread with all this information. I may do one tomorrow.
