It was too big of a story and it was getting out through the Internet.

An example:
FULL DRUDGE: BLOCKBUSTER REPORT: LEWINSKY PASSED ON THREATS TO TRIPP -- FROM PRESIDENT!

Then, once on of the major media outlets broke a story, the rest would have to follow.
