Memo to Karl Rove: Some Thoughts on Combating the Bias in Big Media over Iraq.

p>Dear Karl:

President George W. Bush’s poll numbers are suffering right now and the news about Iraq is largely to blame. Understand we didn’t write “Iraq is to blame,” but rather the “news about Iraq.” That’s because the press has been given an unlimited supply of “it’s all Bush’s fault” rhetoric from the Bush-haters.

Consider the farcical 9-11 Commission hearings which have turned into a Stalin-esque show trial. Or the endless offerings from the Bush-Haters Book of the Month Club. Or the “Blame America First” press obsession with successive “crises” in Iraq. To make matters worse, many of the president’s biggest supporters find their vision obstructed by a burka of denial. Because the information emanating from Big Media is either partially or wholly false, conservatives believe we have nothing to worry about. Unfortunately, precious few know this information is false. Big Media doesn’t report on its own falsity and bias.

Rest assured, we have not lost faith. But we have a few suggestions that may help you combat the anti-Bush dominance in Big Media:

Speak to the people. It is a cliche now to say President Bush is no Reagan or Clinton. But he does possess a true humanity that is not lost on Americans when he speaks directly to them. We’re happy to see this is already being done. But we recommend a slight variation on the big, prime-time, major news network public address. Why not ask local network affiliates in every state the president visits for a little time to make an address to the American people, specifically the people in that state? It’ll bring the president closer to folks, and it’ll give families in key states a sense of ownership over the president. With ownership yields commitment, even fondness.

Arm bloggers with positive stories about Iraq. Believe us, we will apply pressure on Big Media. This worked to perfection in the campaign to defend Augusta National and save the Masters, as described in a recent book review in The Weekly Standard.

Follow the plan to get out of Iraq. If president Bush is perceived to hedge on the transfer of power, it’ll provide John Kerry and his allies in Big Media a whole new line of attack. We don’t agree with the decision to begin to pull out on June 30th, but one of President Bush’s biggest assets is that he honors his commitments, unlike certain other politicians. He must honor this one.

Change the focus of the War on Terror. Recommit, repackage and resell to the American people the operation to capture or kill Osama bin Laden. If bin Laden is captured and Saddam is on trial, President Bush will win the war on terror debate, period. This will also provide Big Media with a flood of new stories to write, rather than Abu Ghraib, et al.

Speaking of Saddam, begin to lay out the case against him publicly. As a build up to the biggest trial since OJ, the US government should leak all leakable facts about the case against this monster (expediting the trial to coincide with the 2004 election wouldn’t hurt, either.)

Display public expressions of Iraqi appreciation. Hundreds of schools have been rehabilitated in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of new textbooks have been handed out in those schools. Why not produce and run an ad on some of our success? The ad could serve as the centerpiece of a whole advertising and PR campaign built around the idea that America has made life better and safer for millions of long-oppressed Iraqis. While John Kerry is endorsed by shadowy “foreign leaders,” simple, regular Iraqi families support President George W. Bush because he delivered freedom and opportunity. It would certainly change the debate about Iraq. And Big Media would cover it because they always cover “process” items like ads and polls.

Start to talk about John Kerry’s war in Iraq. The next president, whoever he is, will have to deal with Iraq. We need to focus on what Kerry would do if elected president. We tried, but mindless conservatives couldn’t read past line one. Look, we’ve had fun beating up on John Kerry’s atrocious record on defense, intelligence and national security. Now let’s connect the dots. John Kerry’s vision for Iraq is a laughable fiction and one that cannot be taken seriously.

Do something interesting and cool. We recommend a live web chat with the president, hosted perhaps on the RNC’s website. It could be conducted with a limited amount of participants (carefully screened, of course) but with an unlimited amount of readers. This would give everyday Americans a chance to feel more in touch with their government, and would be one of those rare campaign moments that distract attention away from the rhetoric and rants from the other side.

Finally, it’s the economy … Always remember, 2004 – as with all national elections – will be decided on the state of the economy. This is borne out again in the most recent Fox News Poll, which shows the economy to be far-and-away a more pressing issue in the hearts of Americans. Here, President Bush has very stable footing. Yet, for some reason, Americans remain anxious. Fix that, and re-election is secured.

Hope this helps.

"Display public expressions of Iraqi appreciation."

Starting with Ahmed Chalabi who should say thank you for the >$33million he received of US taxpayer money.

George Bush Jr. has sold out the American people to help his business partners -- the house of Saud.

This is good start. You think from some of the people around here, nothing is wrong with Bush campaign and everything is hunky-dory. His poll numbers stink and he has got to fight back to get them up.

I am so sick of you losers trying to push this CRAPPOLA!

There is NO evidence of this what so ever. If you don't like what Bush is doing, vote Dem and insure the destruction of America...

His poll numbers stink because the so called "Media" (liberals)have been undercutting our President. They make up "trick questions" for the ordinary public to answer and then they massage these answers to whatever they want to use for their agenda.
The Democrats do not have a monopoly on liberals there a plenty of them in the Republican Party especially in the Senate. The Repubs have the numbers but the liberals have the majority. Nuff said.

Just heard that the so-called major networks will not be airing President Bush's speech tonight.

I have to admit that this conclusion is becoming harder and harder to avoid.

I wouldn't have thought it a year ago, and it saddens me.

There is at the very least very deep anecdotal evidence of the ties between the Sauds and the Bush family.

In addition, the Bush's (and their friends) are so deeply involved in the oil business that it is very difficult to comprehend how they could be truly objective in their handling ot middle eastern affairs.

Time to wake up!

It's May, hello Numbnutz!! What does it matter NOW that his poll numbers are down?

This is a good sign that his numbers are down because it gives him the opportunity to bring them up WHEN IT MATTERS!!

It's only a reflection of what is going on in Iraq. Stop listening to the Libs in the media, he sure as hell doesn't because he knows that the majority of the American people don't either.

Haven't seen that reported yet, but if true, it just lends credence to the piece's suggestion that he "go local".

No to speak all negative here, but if there is a terrorist attack on say, commuter rails, tunnels and bridges...water supplies, etc., the economy will tank overnite.

Liberals will not give him a honeymoon like they did POST 9-11 and go for the jugglar instead...saying that if he hadn't alienated the Muslims,...yada, yada, yada.

Certain posters on FR are intentional disruptors or plants funded by the DNC. This has been a public service announcement.

I heard it on Fox and Friends, this morning. E.D. Hill was talking to David Gergen about it. Gergen seemed surprised that the networks wouldn't carry it. E.D. said that only FOX News and MSNBC would carry it. She didn't mention CNN but I can't believe that CNN would not carry it.
