Authorities were investigating the cause of a fire this morning at a S. Jackson Street home, which was already branded with a somewhat notorious history.
At 6:09 a.m., Jackson firefighters were called to 1223 S. Jackson St. where flames were showing from the northeast corner of the two-story wooden structure. Within a half-hour, firefighters had the blaze under control.
No one was inside. However, fire investigators were somewhat suspicious about the blaze's origins since the home's primary dweller, Dewell "Godfather" Brandon, 67, was found dead slumped over the steering wheel of a vehicle on S. Jackson Street around 8:15 p.m. Monday.
In Brandon's case, there were no obvious signs of foul play, Deputy Chief Matt Heins said. An autopsy was to be performed.
The S. Jackson Street home served as a base for an assortment of characters with colorful street names, according to recent court testimony.
The house was frequented by Yatasha "Tee Tee" Bush and her pimp/boyfriend Anthony "Tennessee" Hubbard, who was recently found guilty in her slaying.
At this morning's fire, Jackson police officers rapped on doors and talked to neighbors.
A neighbor at 1219 S. Jackson St. was awakened by his dog scratching on the door. When Hosie Bush saw the flames, he hooked up a hose to his kitchen faucet and tried to douse the fire.
"That wasn't happening at all," said Bush, who phoned the fire department.
Heat from the fire melted siding on the south side of Bush's home.
Another resident reported that his stepson smelled smoke before 6 a.m. By then, the fire was fully involved, said Lee Roy Brown, who lives at 1212 S. Jackson St. Like others on the street, he only knew the resident as "Godfather."
"It's a shame I don't know his real name," Brown said
