"He responded w/a personal email suggesting ways I could counter such undesirable practices."

He's personally answered a couple of emails I sent him. He's a good guy.

I teach college English and I read his column, The "Coronation of the New Queen" (about the new UNC chancellor), to my class. In that article, Prof. Adams uses the phrase, "let them eat cake."

Sadly, about half of my students had no idea what that phrase refers to.

On a lighter note, several students were natives of China and they took the article quite literally, thinking that a queen actually was being coronated at the University of North Carolina, LOL!

I'm a retired 12th grade English teacher now, but during my teaching days, I also encountered students (too many imo) who were woefully ignorant of the simplest things. For instance, in teaching Milton's sonnet referring to the "talents", I had to explain Jesus' parable.

Another very real problem was getting them to understand that there is a very real difference between an unfounded opinion and a fact. Even when I explained that opinion based on fact was more viable than an unfounded one, some were not convinced....asserted they had a right to their own opinion!
