hen the C:> prompt appears, type "scanreg" and press the Enter key. This invokes the scanreg utility program. Scan the current registry. Already tried that. Got "bad file name" or some such.

If you have your 'install' CD, put it in and reboot. I have tried that. I suspect that my CD drive might be bad. However, I have a second (actually a CD player / burner.)
Bit, I cannot figure out how to make it the default drive.

Reloading Windows 98 is a good idea and may get you going again, but I would think to the next step. Your Windows files got corrupted--could be a hard drive on the way out. I had similar system errors when my hard drive was getting ready to go. Once you are up and running be sure you have the most up to date anti-virus and run a complete scan of the hard drive. You could also have a virus/worm lurking that is corrupting your files.
Probably time you consider upgrading not only your operating system, but also your computer. Machines of a Windows 98 vintage often don't handle Windows XP very well--too little RAM and too little CPU power. For a replacement computer consider going with a local PC builder rather than a major brand. PC builders will assemble a machine for less bucks and give you a better choice of components and features.

Re-install Win98 as if it were a new install. (do not format your disk!)
It leaves all your files and drivers intact.
That is the best solution.

Buy a MacI'm about to...that Linux thing is becoming non-viable as IBM trains, at IBM's expense, tens of thousands of Indian and Chinese in its Deathmatch with Microsoft!

At boot (before windoze starts) You need to press a certain key, some systems are "F1" others are "Del" that will take You to the BIOS Setup page.
You should be able to change the boot order from there

If your machine won't handle XP, I'd at least suggest going to Win2000. Which is in many ways more stable than XP and not nearly the memory hog.

My G3 beats most PCs right now in terms of speed Sure as the sun rises in the East, every question posted about PC problems gets this type of response. Fine.
Thanks to those who have sent helpful suggestions, even including phone support.
Freepers (even Mac users and Linux touters) are the best!
I'll have a new box here next week. I'll then be looking only for recovering data.

Sorry, I truly did not mean to rub salt in a wound.
win98 has problems and I think an upgrade is in order.
While i use a Mac for the graphics ability, my CFO uses Win NT, which he finds as a better verison than the rest.
The big problem with Windows-based systesm is constantly having to updates patches. Try the upgrades and see if that works. The other advice you've gotten here is very solid.
