I've tried everything I know and searched the internet including microsoft, but I aint, getting anyhere.
Computer froze. When I restarted, it began trying to detect my ethernet card, then my printer. Then I got an invalid page fault.
Now, when I boot, I get only to the Win 98 screen, then when starting to load. "Explorer.exe has caused invalid page fault."
Have tried the emergency Boot disk, and tried to follow instruction, but I'm getting nowhere.
I have run scandisk from DOS - no problems. When I run sys c: I am seeing my programs, so evidently the hard drive is still alive(?)
Who can help this cluless one?
If you have your Windows 98 installation disk handy, try an upgrade install. This will leave your applications and registry intact, but reinstall all the Windows dlls.
Boot from the installation disk and follow the instructions.
Not an expert but when I had that happen to me, I just reloaded win98. This shouldn't effect anything else on your hard drive. Good luck.
I've found that the best place to get help is at http://forums.techguy.org/ . You'll have to register to post your question (if you don't find it already having been discussed), but it's a free sign-up, although, like FreeRepublic, they appreciate any donations.
If you have your 'install' CD, put it in and reboot.

upgrade to Linux.
Ditto #2 3 & 5
Post the EXACT message, with details.
I used to run Win98. I found that certain Norton program created serious 'page fault' conficts.
Have you installed or upgraded new Norton/Symantec programs?
Also, I sometimes had a problem with explorer (file system program) corrupting.
I would try re-installing Win98.
Buy a Mac
Upgrade to XP...
Linux. The ultimate windows service pack.
Time to upgrade?
When you start your Windows 98-based or Windows Millennium Edition-based computer, you may receive the following error message:
Explorer:
This program has performed an illegal operation and will be shut down. If the problem persists, contact the program vendor.
If you then click Details, you may see the following information:
EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in module EXPLORER.EXE at memory address.

CAUSE
This behavior can occur if the Microsoft Windows 95 version of the Explorer.exe file is located in the root folder of drive C.
RESOLUTION
Windows 98
In Windows 98, boot the computer to the Startup menu and then click Command Prompt Only.
For more information about how to boot your computer to safe mode, please see the following article. 180902 How to Start a Windows 98-Based Computer in Safe Mode
Type the following at the prompt: ren c:\explorer.exe explorer.old, and then press ENTER. Restart the computer
Had something like this happen when I used Spybot and removed something from CLSID (I think). I had to use one of the backups --from Oct 2002 because my computer stopped making backups.
Well here is what I did even if this might not solve your problem but could help others...or me in the future ;`).
To restore a previous Windows Registry on systems running Windows 98 Reboot the computer.
As the boot process begins, hold down the Control key (Ctrl).
When the boot-up menu appears, select option 5, "Command Prompt Only."
When the C:> prompt appears, type "scanreg" and press the Enter key. This invokes the scanreg utility program. Scan the current registry.
Choose the "View backups" option to display a list of recent backups of the Windows registry. Scroll and highlight the version of the registry you wish to restore from.
Choose "restore." When the restore process is complete, the scanreg utility displays a dialog box with the title "You have restored a good registry."
Choose "Restart" to reboot the computer with the selected registry version.
Now if only I could find out why bloody Windows disabled my USB port --worked fine one day , the next it didn't...personally I am getting sick of Microsoft products.
Then get this little program Click here
It helped me when I was having some problems with windows 98.
I had these symptoms once caused by a bad video card. I changed the card and the computer stabilized.
Got a new box on the way from Dell, but I'd like to salvage if at all possible.
Found that and tried it.
