Thanks very much for the advice. I blew the designation, though: it's a 2003 Honda Spirit 750. Same advice?

I'm also looking at a previously-owned '95 Yamaha Virago 750 (5,000 miles), if you've got any advice/opinions on that.

Yup, same as with the Aero. Great-looking bike, should be reliable if well-maintained, but it doesn't appear to have hydraulically-adjusted valves (key question to ask when buying a bike, IMHO), looks like it has tube tires (yuck) and it uses a chain drive (I like belt or shaft-drive MUCH better).

The Yamaha appears to be a direct competitor of the Kaw Vulcan 750, except that it's air-cooled (it'll overheat faster when stuck in summer traffic). Like the Kaw, the Yamaha design has been tried and true since the 1980s (1981!), so there should be no shortage of parts for it.

I neglected to mention earlier about the Kaw Vulcan 750 that it has a VERY complete instrument panel (tach AND speedo). Unlike most bikes, it also has a kickstand AND center stand -- very nice when you want to work on it.

See also this checklist for things to inspect when buying a used bike.
