The neoconservative dream was to create a pro-American, free-market democracy in Iraq to serve as a model and catalyst for Arab peoples and convert Iraq into a base camp of American Empire, flanking Iran and Syria. It was to bring to power an Iraqi DeGaulle named Ahmed Chalabi, who would recognize Israel, build a Mosul-to-Haifa oil pipeline and become the Simon Bolivar of the Middle East.Iraq "republic" survive one vote...then civil war start by loosers. Kurds leave and Turkey invade Kurdistan. Iran invade to assist Shietes. Saudies invade to stop Shiete stateon own border...where oil and Shiete majority. And Syria invade to grab resources....all in all...sharks go in for dead whale meat.

Well he does think that the US military is a den of sadistic torturers and not at all like the altruistic Russian military of today or yore.

There are few people more dispicable than Pat Buchanan. He is a traitor, fraud, con artist, coward, and most likely "Deep Throat".

Seems to me history will judge him perspicacious:
The neoconservative dream was to create a pro-American, free-market democracy in Iraq to serve as a model and catalyst for Arab peoples and convert Iraq into a base camp of American Empire, flanking Iran and Syria. It was to bring to power an Iraqi DeGaulle named Ahmed Chalabi, who would recognize Israel, build a Mosul-to-Haifa oil pipeline and become the Simon Bolivar of the Middle East. That utopian vision has vanished. President Bush has rejoined the realist camp. We are not going deeper in. We are on the way out.
These aspirations have moldered to dust in the desert. We are in the process now of cutting deals with every Mullah and warlord who can promise stability and dimunition of US casualties. Which should have been our modus operandi from the beginning. Buchannon on this thread is being shot as the messenger.

BTW you do know that Pat is rooting for those 'Mullahs" don't you? He has always been an Arabist along with Novak.

"Seems to me history will judge him perspicacious"His only hope of being even a footnote in history is his role of Deep Throat.

He isn't right. He's a wordsmith who easily fools people not experienced in analyzing political essays. Try taking everyword he writes and examining it individually. With a little practice you'll be able to instantly spot his deceptions.

Look if you disagree with his reasoning, tell us why.
If you just do not like Buchanan because you think him an Arabist, or, I suspect, an antisemite, then tell us that.
But do not pretend that name calling is an intellectually honest excuse for not submitting your reactions on the issues he raises to scrutiny on these boards?

If you just do not like Buchanan because you think him an Arabist, or, I suspect, an antisemite, then tell us that. Well yes he is both. However; Pat is also consistently wrong in his analysis of the WOT in general and Iraq in particular. At every point in the Iraq war he has been wrong. He predicted tens of thousands of casualties at the beginning. He has predicted civil war in Iraq ever since the war ended and the occupation began. He has predicted a general uprising of the "Arab street" worldwide. He has predicted economic collapse due to the war itself. On all points he has been proven incorrect. Does that sway him? Hell no, he just moves the goal post to his next prediction.
