Fox News gets foothold in House of Commons

Tuesday, June 1, 2004 - Page B2

I have learned that Fox News, domain of Bill O'Reilly, the obnoxious yak-show host who lovingly describes Canadians as "dishonest pinheads," has one official subscriber in Canada -- none other than the House of Commons. A Fox mouthpiece in New York tells me the Commons has been getting the Fox service -- free of charge -- since last August. How lucky. And no: The signal does not emanate from an American satellite service such as DirecTV, which is still illegal in Canada. Fox, always eager to curry favour with foreign politicians, simply provided the Commons with a descrambling code, allowing a dish somewhere in Ottawa to receive a feed from Fox's Galaxy satellite.

So if our pols are entitled to get a signal, why aren't the rest of us? Fox, launched by loveable Rupert Murdoch in 1996 and now the dominant cable news network, has been trying to penetrate the Canadian market for some time. Its first application, included in a bundle of other services, including ESPN and Cinemax, failed last year. Now it's back before the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission, this time on its own. With MPs on the freebie list, the Goat is willing to hazard a wee guess that its second attempt may just succeed.

There was an editorial in the WSJ this morning, that tells how John Kerry is leading the fight in the legislature to keep Canadian beef out of the US. I think that the Canadian Freepers should be aware of this fact, but I don't have an on-line subscription to the WSJ.

A socialist is complaining about the "evil" capitalist south of their border.

He prefers that people NOT learn of all the news? We have that same problem from our "official gubmint channels (abc, cbs, nbc").

Communists, socialists, and other dictatorial types do not like real diversity (ie. uncontrolled information) in their news, tv, libraries, etc.

Before someone rants about our LOCAL cities, counties and states controlling the socialist librarians - that IS the state's right to do so - as it is a county rights, and a city's right, and even a community's right toi say that porn is NOT allowed.

Only the federal govt is disallowed from forcing its views on the citizens of the states.

When you say porn not allowed, do you mean sold or made/owned in that city/county/state?

I don't think most Canadians could possibly handle Fox news. It's a good thing they are protected from it by their government.

Because Canada apparently does not believe in freedom of speech, as witnessed by its laws criminalizing so-called "hate speech", as defined by extreme left-wing courts.

Hey, Globe and Mail - SHUT UP. How terrifyingly typical of the canadian government to take for themselves that which they deny and have denied for several years to the rest of the people who live in canada. Perfect. Their record stands. But, keep voting Liberal, y'all.

After Canada, the boys at Fox are going to try something really tough like broadcasting into the D.C. area.

"So if our pols are entitled to get a signal, why aren't the rest of us? "

Not just 'pols'. . .but Leftist/socialist politicians; and then the question answers itself.

Well
since our Prime Minister doesn't have to pay income tax in Canada
(his shipping companies all are registered in the Caribbean)
why shouldn't he be allowed to watch FOX TV?
