We're becoming more of a rude society. Also I think poor management allows rudeness from their employees because you don't see it equally everywhere.

When I waited tables, if I wasn't nice to the table I didn't get a tip. I saw my income increase directly proportionate to my smile size.

I have no problem telling a service worker that he or she is being a little, um, overbearing at me, since I've done nothing but expect said SW to do his job (for which I am paying), and taking my issue to the manager as well.

I'm always polite, but I won't back down. If you are on the clock to scan and bag my groceries, I am paying you to scan and bag my groceries, and I expect you to scan and bag my groceries.

I do not expect you to ignore me standing at your register, to talk to the cashier at the next register, to chew your gum with your mouth open so I can see what flavor it is (chewing in public is another ill-manners thread), or to make eye contact with me and announce that despite the light being on, your register is closed.

It's that simple.

In return, I have my money ready when you have my groceries ready. I don't get into line, decide I forgot something, and expect you to hold up the line waiting for me. I carry out my own stuff, so y'all don't even have to leave the air conditioning.

Yup. Good manners is a duty we owe to others. They're yet another victim of Hollywood's cultural libertarianism.
