Two mums one too many for toddler TV, Aunty told
The Australian ^ | June 04, 2004 | By Barclay Crawford and Patricia Karvelas

LESBIANS on television are usually spotted in late-night SBS movies, or in a TV drama trying to halt sliding ratings.

But when they pop up on Play School at 9.30 on a Monday morning, it's a different story.

The L-word was all the buzz yesterday as federal politicians lined up to condemn Monday's episode of the pre-schoolers' program, which included a segment where "Brenna" was taken to an amusement park with her "two mums".

Speaking "on behalf of the majority of Australian parents", Children's Minister Larry Anthony said he was concerned the ABC was "putting out this kind of content".

"When it comes to my children, when I want to explain about same-sex couples, it should be up to parents, it should be up to me, not the Australian broadcaster," Mr Anthony said.

Health Minister Tony Abbott called the episode "shocking" and Communications Minister Daryl Williams has told ABC managing director Russell Balding Play School should deal only with issues "appropriate for the age of its audience".

The footage, screened during the regular Through the Windows segment, showed Brenna's two mums waving and smiling while she played on a merry-go-round with her friend.

According to the ABC and the show's presenters, Jay Laga'aia and Leah Vandenburg, the segment reflected part of the community, and was not about promoting lesbian families.

"It's about two girls who are on a fun outing -- that's it, there is no statement," a bemused Ms Vandenberg said.

Head of Children's Television Claire Henderson said the film showed one of the many types of family groups that exist in Australia today.

"There was no emphasis or focus placed on any social issue. Any such constructions are adult constructions," she said.

Other segments aired by Play School had celebrated the Jewish holiday Hannukah, shown a Muslim family, and told the story of a child who was a bridesmaid at her grandmother's wedding.

Ms Henderson said the ABC's editorial policy demanded it not "conceal the real world from" children and that "children's programs should be relevant to children, rather than imposing adult concerns and expectations".

Father-of-five Laga'aia would not have stopped his three youngest - aged two, four and five - from watching their dad on Monday's show. "Of course not, because kids aren't prejudiced. They learn that from us adults," he said.

"The girls have got two mums, but who cares, because they love their daughter, and that is the most important thing in the world."

"children's programs should be relevant to children, rather than imposing adult concerns and expectations".

Of course, she means the concerns and expectations of adults who don't agree with her, right?

She's fine with imposing HER expectations on the kids.

"When it comes to my children, when I want to explain about same-sex couples, it should be up to parents, it should be up to me, not the Australian broadcaster," Mr Anthony said.

Mr. Anthony is missing the point; they don't like what he might tell his own children.

In the "real world," adults understand that a child can only have one "mum."

He must not remember being a child. In fact, I've heard a few people claim that bullying is pretty bad in Australian schools.

Well then why not just show them the playboy channel 24/7 or how about showing them photos of mothers and fathers who died leaping to their deaths off of the twin towers. OOOH better yet let's show a partial birth abortion so that kids can learn what mommy can do if she decides she doesn't want a baby. What a complete moron.

Bet they didn't have a segment about the Christ child being born.

If it keeps on rainin', the levee's gonna break.

Interesting that you should use that metaphor. When I was a senior in high school, I had a wonderful teacher who taught a class entitled, simply, Humanities. A comprehensive subject, to be sure.

Every week, she would write a quote from someone in the corner of the blackboard, and we were required to memorize that quote. To this day, I remember many of those quotations. One was, "He who thinks the old embankments useless, and destoys them, is sure to suffer from the desolation caused by overflowing waters." - Confucius.

At that time (1964), it was shameful for an unmarried girl, or woman, to become pregnant. The illegitimacy rate for whites was well down in the single digits, percentage wise; for blacks, low to mid twenties.

Now, of course, there is no stigma whatsoever attached to having out-of-wedlock chidren, and the illegitimacy rates have skyrocketed; mid to high twenties for whites, and 2 out of 3 for blackes.

And we wonder why crime is so prevalent, why our schools don't work, why so many can't read or write, why our society is in general decline. Go figure.

And the process continues.

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Nip it in the bud, Australia! Better to get the wasps early in the spring before they've increased their numbers. A little gasoline poured into ground yellowjackets works better than any store bought stuff.

The homo-promoters are trying to weasel and sneak and worm their way into mainstream media, education, counselling, medical associations, churches, etc etc. OF course, they've been doing that for 30 years and that's why it's "Handbasket Time" in the US.

It's never too late to fight with yellowjackets, late in the season just means we have to work harder at it.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this busy pinglist.

"Bemused" is the wrong word here. It means cause to be confused emotionally. It does not mean cause to be confused about your sexual identity. It also doesn't mean "stupidly considered" or "lied".

What a mental midget. He just diminshed himself as a dad. Dad's aren't needed as long as two selfish women love each other.
