Dump Cheney, get Condi, and have her run in 08. Watch the dems squirm as they try to hold back their latent racism.

Haven't thought much about it, but I hear the Gov. of Colorado is conservative and supports good old-fashioned American ideals. If I'm wrong, I bet freepers from Colorado will correct me.

My favorite son candidate would be Ted Nugent - guns, venison and rock 'n roll.

Owens. Rice.

I'd be OK with Powell as a compromise, but even if he wanted it, neither conservative activists nor Powell's reputedly much-more-liberal wife Alma will countenance his running.

Who should run? Or who would have a good chance at capturing the nomination if they did? Very different questions.

As to who has a good shot if they did run, I'd eliminate Condi Rice and Jeb Bush. Rice has no experience running for electoral office, and jumping to the most challenging electoral race of all is not the way to learn. Jeb Bush will discover that neither the party nor the country are inclined to elect a Bush for the third time in four presidencies (yes, I'm assuming a W win in '04). Spooks people about aristocracy and dynasty.

Likely "moderate" challengers (I think of them more as liberal Republicans) would have to include Colin Powell, John McCain, and Rudy Giuliani. These have to be the powerhouses, should they choose to run (and each one of them has serious reasons not to).

From the conservatives, I'd look to a number of governors and Senators. It's far too early to tell whom among them would even consider it, let alone be able to mount a serious campaign.

I still think the powerhouses to watch are the first three. And of course, should there be a Constitutional Amendment passed to allow foreign born citizens to become president, Arnold Schwarzeneger would move to the front of the list.

Here we go! Owens/Watts in 2008. However Cheney should step down in 2006 for 'health reasons' and Watts should be nominated to finish the term. He wont run for president in 2008, but will be open for the vice. This gives the repubs semi-incumbant status. Rice is good, but I want her to get elected to something first, to learn the election part of it.
