Homophobia kills, literally
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | 6-06-2004 | Cynthia Tucker

Posted on 06/05/2004 12:19:30 PM PDT by Wally_Kalbacken

Though President Bush rarely mentions it -- too many conservatives in Congress are uncomfortable with amending the Constitution to ban same-sex unions -- conservative preachers and right-wing activists can't let go of gay marriage. They're still using its "threat" to traditional families to rally their parishioners, lest they forget to be judgmental and unwittingly slip into love and mercy.

Nowhere are the front lines in the battle against gay marriage tended with more care than in conservative black churches, where ministers regularly denounce homosexuality as an abomination. It is a curious approach they would no doubt characterize as "tough love," as they pray for the gay members of their flocks to be delivered from their affliction.

It's too bad that some of that prayer time is not devoted to fervent supplication that black churchgoers be delivered from the affliction of homophobia. Bigotry fuels the scourge of AIDS in black America, and the plague is making its greatest inroads into the population from which come the worker bees of the black church: black women.

Black women accounted for 72 percent of the new cases of HIV among women from 1999 to 2002; studies have found that a black woman is 23 times more likely to be infected than a white woman.

For years, researchers believed that most women infected with HIV were intravenous drug users or their sexual partners. But more recent research turned up a different route of transmission -- heterosexual sex. In 2001, an estimated 67 percent of black women with AIDS contracted the virus through heterosexual sex, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation, which studies health-related matters. Black women accounted for half of all HIV infections acquired through heterosexual sex, in men or women, from 1999 to 2002, says the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The disproportionate spread of HIV among black women can be traced directly to the covert world of black men on the "down low" -- men who secretly engage in sex with other men while keeping girlfriends or wives and pointedly denying that they are gay or bisexual. That underworld, meanwhile, has its roots in black homophobia, so virulent that these men are unwilling or unable to acknowledge their sexuality.

This year, researchers released the results of a study that showed a shocking rate of HIV infection among black male college students in North Carolina, where newer testing methods reveal infection earlier. Of 84 students newly infected with HIV in the state over the last four years, 73 were black. Of those black men, 67 said they had sex with men and 27 said they also had female partners.

A couple of months ago, NBC's "Law and Order: SVU" aired an episode that revolved around a circle of black men on the "DL." One character -- a highly regarded prosecutor played by actor Michael Beach -- had infected his wife with AIDS. He had also murdered a colleague to prevent exposure of his double life.

Perhaps the best lines in the episode were spoken by another of the black men in the circle of gay sex:

"Here's a headline. A black man can make mistakes, he can even do time. We stand by him. What we will not stand by is a black man who is a homosexual."

It is not clear whether homophobia is any more rampant or deeply rooted in black America than in white America. Bigotry is not an easy thing to measure. But this much is clear: Our homophobia has cost us more dearly, as AIDS takes a more devastating toll in black America.

You'd think the black church -- which played such a vital role in the struggle against racism -- would be struggling against homophobia, as well. Instead, too many black clergy preach a message of intolerance and exclusion. Those kinds of sermons should carry a surgeon general's warning.

Bigotry? How about ignorance, Cynthia? Look at every category of public health - stratify by income, education, proximity to medical care, etc. and you see elevated levels of almost all diseases among blacks (except perhaps, melanoma). What would explain this other than ignorance?

She wants to blame bigotry - when in her own piece she points out that it is bisexuality of black males that is generating a great deal of this problem in the black community. Bigotry?

Cynthia - you fool.

All I can do anymore is laugh at Cynthia.  Her only value to me is to prove that Dowdism isn't just a white woman's disease.

What a tourtured stream of logic!!! She blames hetrosexual sex and homophobia for the spread of AIDS. Maybe if the men were not engaged in SODOMY on the "down low" the disease wouldn't be spreading. This is the same type of logic that has gay activists staffing the AIDS prevention programs run by the government.

This is really an incredible piece of BS. AIDS is the only "elected" disease that I am aware of. It is 100% preventable. Bigotry has nothing to do with this. By this logic, AIDS would disappear if only the culture at large would accept homosexual behavior as "normal." Can't wait to see the AMA buy into that one!

I remember a time when so-called "Bigotry" was such that homosexuals didn't come out of the closet, there was no open homosexuality on the airwaves, and guess what? There was no aids.

It is the lowering of standards, the permissiveness and the resulting promiscuity and homosexuality that kills.

Homosexuality and aids have increased as "bigotry" has waned.

The care and concern that communities used to show that prevented people from exploring deviant sex, has waned into apathy. As a result, people die from STD's and the left calls the remaining people who care "Bigots".

Its the same old story - poor downtrodden minorities - victims of oppression, bigotry, and racism. If ONLY America would stop having any sense of right and wrong. Then these poor "victims" would all be miraculously cured of their main problem. This crap may have been believed in 1950 - but not in 2004 - after nearly 50 years of societal payment (affirmative action, etc.) for past ills. Homophobia has nothing to do with the spread of AIDS. Besides, I don't know anyone who is afraid of gays; just many who do not condone the homosexual "death-style".

What are they saying that isn't true? I guess these left wingers can't handle the truth.

"... lest they forget to be judgmental and unwittingly slip into love and mercy." One of the first pleas Satan offers when trying to inject degeneracy into any society or church.

Well Cynthia, all I know for sure is that my mom taught me not to stick things in my mouth that could be unhealthy and that I should never stick anything in my rear that was smaller than my elbow.....wait, she might have said ear, but that's the way I remember it.

Anyway...cry me a river...you make choices in life and those choices result in consequences...very basic, huh.

It doesn't require a Constitutional Amendment. Marriage is a privilege that requires a license. All adults have privilege to marry one consenting adult of opposite gender.

In addition, Reynolds v. United States, a Supreme Court decision, says it is Constitutional marriage to regulate marriage by statute alone. Reynolds v. United States is also where the erroneous "separation of church and state" comes from. Let's cram it up their rear.

Ceremonious sanctification for voluntary perversion of human anatomy - - sounds religious to me. When will my conservative political allies learn to use the Left's own garbage against them???

The Attorney General should arrest all public officials who grant any "gay marriage" licenses to enforce the Reynolds decision, including the Massassachusetts Supreme Moron Court.

As with most AJC editorials, Cynthia's never fail to irritate because of their insistence on finding bigotry and racism where none exist.

Homosexual Agenda Ping - Cynthia Tucker just doesn't get it. Probably never will. In order to know the truth, the first thing one has to do is admit they are wrong or ignorant.

A cup full of (something icky) can't get filled with pure water. First one must empty his cup, then he can receive the water of truth.

It is very sad that black women are getting AIDS. What is the solution?

1. Monogamous, faithful marriage.
2. Chastity before marriage.
3. Men should be taught that it is wrong, unhealthy, unnatural and immoral to have sex with other men.
4. Anal sex is unhealthy, unnatural etc even between men and women. Plus it's nasty even thinking about it.

There, no more spread of AIDS.

Let me know if anyone wants on/off this pinglist.
