Supreme Court justices react to death of Ronald Reagan
Saturday, June5, 2004, 7:52 PM
Chief U-S Justice William H. Rehnquist:
"I will always be extremely grateful to President Ronald Reagan for having conferred upon me the high honor of the office of Chief Justice of the United States. I extend my warmest sympathy to Nancy Reagan and the rest of the Reagan family on his death."
Justice Antonin Scalia:
"Ronald Reagan needs no one to sing his praises. The man who presided over the bloodless dissolution of the Soviet Empire will go down in history as one of our great presidents.
"He was shamelessly patriotic and infectiously optimistic. My sympathies go out to his family, in particular to his wife, Nancy, who enabled him to fill out his time here in privacy and dignity. May he rest in peace."
The court decision on the death was 5-4, with five justices with black armbands under their robes and four doing the Chicken Dance and Electric Slide.
One should add that Sandra Day O'Connor manfully resisted the urge to do the Macarena out of a decorious desire not to dance on the grave of the man who gave her a great job (in spite of the fact that she spent the following 20 years dissing everything he believed in).
Kennedy and O'Conner. Well........
Where are the statements from Ruth (Buzzy) Ginsberg and Sandra Day-O and the rest?
