Governor (Schwarzenegger) upbeat on license bill

HOLT - Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Saturday he is very optimistic about reaching agreement on a law offering driver's licenses for undocumented immigrants and denied he is insisting the licenses carry a mark that flags the holders' illegal status. But the Republican governor said such a mark, which license supporters have decried as a scarlet letter that would lead to discrimination and abuse, would be the next best thing if he and lawmakers can't come up with other ways to meet security concerns, principally a way to verify the license applicant's identity.

"If they cannot satisfy all of the security requirements, the next best thing would be to have a different type of a driver's license so we can identify that this is only for driving legally, and not to be used for anything else - airports, checking accounts - all of those things that we usually use our driver's license for," Schwarzenegger said.

The comments, made after touring flooded farmland near here, softened the position others close to the negotiations have ascribed to Schwarzenegger. And they reaffirmed the governor's desire to enact a driver's license bill.

"One way or the other, we will do it, and that's why we are negotiating," the governor said. "I'm very optimistic that it will be done, and it's just a matter of time."

I still don't approve of licenses for illegals, but if flagging them as to legal status were done, that is an improvement. BUT, only if we start requiring the show of licenses to vote, for everyone, not just foreigners.

Howdy Norm! Lovely day here.......seventy-four degrees, soft breeze, sunshine............................nice.

So an "illegal" alien shows up for his drivers license test both written and verbal (in Spanish of course..and expenses...all underwritten by the California tax payers)...

And is arrested for violating the law.....

That Arnold is one smart cookie alright....

You saw it, but for others -- the real story and "strategery" at:

Licenses for lawbreakers (illegal immigrants) -- the sequel (California)

"FORGET THE HYPE and the threats and the rumors about a deal brewing in Sacramento. California is not going to enact a bill to allow illegal immigrants to apply for driver's licenses this year or anytime soon.

... they had to know that Schwarzenegger, no fool, would not sign on to such an unpopular measure. They just pretended to believe there was a deal to save face."

"it's just a matter of time."

... like about 100 years, which Arnold wisely omitted from his statement.

When are people going to realize that Arnold is not stupid.

I also like the idea of keeping any illegal driver's license as distinct and separate from the legal driver's licenses. Likewise, people here in California should be required to present a valid state ID at the polling booths.

RINOld can guarantee his political death certificate by signing any bill giving illegals a driver's license.

In the article posted here, Arnold says the following:

"One way or the other, we will do it [give lcenses to illegals], and that's why we are negotiating," the governor said. "I'm very optimistic that it will be done, and it's just a matter of time."

So, is he lying about being "optimistic that it will be done, and it's just a matter of time"?

Selective quote -- as I said, why don't you read the article, the link to which I posted which puts things in perspective.

Arnold puts requirements on it, that the Dems will never go along with, and so Arnold will never sign the bill.

Again -- why is it that people here attack Arnold, but not the Dems who are pushing the bill.

I already read that article.

That's your opinion. I disagree with it.

Again -- why is it that people here attack Arnold, but not the Dems who are pushing the bill.

I can't stand Cedillo and his fellow rats, but how many times should I post that before it gets old, stale and boring?

So far, I am mostly happy with Arnold but I will not tolerate pandering to illegal aliens. I am sick of all these "debates" about the correct way to kiss some illegal's butt. Deport them.

This country holds the world record for the number of people with collge degrees who do not understand the meaning of the word "illegal", I think.

Actually we have.

We've repeatedly said we'd like to see the SCOTUS reaffirm the original review of the 14th Amendment and then wave a satisfying goodbye as Cedillo and Nunez, both anchor babies, are shipped back to Mexico

Reason #967 why I will never support a Liberal, regardless of whether he has an "R" or a "D" by his name.
