REAGAN MADE THIS YOUNG LEFTY SEE THE RIGHT
New York Post ^ | 6/07/04 | ANDREA PEYSER

June 7, 2004 -- AT FIRST, I thought the man laughable. Dreadful, actually. Ronald Reagan was an actor who dared talk tough to the scary Soviets, and broke with decades of political orthodoxy by insisting that Americans wean themselves off government handouts and pull themselves up by the bootstraps. Yes, he really said things like that.

It hardly seems conceivable today. But back in 1980, I was an eager, uncompromised leftist — or so I thought.

Like most of my privileged pals attending Northeastern universities, I spent sober days ingesting a rich diet of Marxism and Feminism 101, and late nights spewing inanities about America's appalling lack of equality and opportunity.

The answers to our vast problems — other people's problems — lay on the left, we were certain.

Then, it changed.

When he became president, Reagan represented everything I viewed with suspicion. Optimism. Patriotism. Personal responsibility. But as his presidency progressed, so did my journey toward the political middle. Reagan taught future generations of lefties not to expect the government to solve all problems.

Good job.

And Good job with this essay! Well said.

On Saturday, the day former President Reagan passed away, I was at my son's American Legion baseball game. I got a phone call from my wife and went to the car to turn on the radio. I caught Tammy Bruce on her new KABC radio show (Los Angeles market), and she was broken up and crying while reading the statement.

Some people might remember Tammy Bruce as the former NOW head in Los Angeles. But she is evidently a changed person, in some respects, because she was talking about how Reagan's moral clarity had changed her life and how she was able to renounce many of the things she had done earlier in her life.

It must have taken awhile. Tammy was a huge supporter of Bill and Hillary until the stained blue dress. She had one of the great programs ever on KFI either at the end of 1997 or beginning of 1998. She turned on the Clintons and was outrage that they had been lying to her. She was screaming that she now hated them. It was excellent radio.

I, too, had remembered Tammy Bruce as squarely left-of-center. But lately I have heard her filling in for Al Rantel on my evening commute, and was surprised at how she, over the years, had moderated her views.

I don't agree with her on some issues, but she has indeed become a good force for our side.
