Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak told Israel Television Sunday that the Labor party should have taken much firmer centralist stands, by now, for example, that Arafat is not a partner for negotiations. "We should have stated emphatically that we will support Sharon in positive steps, but not join his government unless he goes ahead with his plans," he said.
Barak said he had hoped Sharon realized by now that leaders must sometimes make difficult decisions, but was afraid the PM was ending this battle weaker than before. However, he said, the fight was not yet over.
"A prime minister must be prepared to take these steps knowing full well that they may lead to the fall of a government or new elections," he said. "The country needs total disengagement and Sharon needs to start leading."
"If his steps lead to elections, the public will surely vote for disengagement," he said.
Isn't this the same guy who wanted to give Arafat the whole shebang a few years ago?
