BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (Reuters) - Director Michael Moore's controversial anti-Iraq war film "Fahrenheit 9/11" won a standing ovation on Tuesday night from an audience of film industry professionals attending its West Coast debut at Academy Award headquarters.
After an audience of more than 600 people in the theater of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences cheered, whistled and laughed their way through the two-hour film, they jumped to their feet to give Moore a standing ovation as he took the stage.
Clearly buoyed by the reception, Moore, whose film is scathingly critical and mocking of President Bush, declared: "There has been a shift in this country. ... The average American is finally beginning to figure it out. We were duped (into invading Iraq)."
"I hope this country will be back in our hands in a short period of time," he added.
Republicans have denounced the film as unfair.
"Fahrenheit 9/11," with its strong attack on a U.S. president who is highly unpopular in Europe, won the top prize at the recent Cannes Film Festival, but it was refused distribution by the Walt Disney Co., whose Miramax film unit made the movie.
Disney chief Michael Eisner said the company did not want to distribute a highly partisan film in the middle of a presidential election year. He sold the rights to the film back to Miramax heads Bob and Harvey Weinstein, who formed a consortium to distribute the film and have it in theaters on June 25.
The dispute led to a spate of stories of bad blood between the embattled Eisner and the Weinsteins, including a recent one in The New York Times that speculated that Eisner was seeking a buyer for the prestigious Miramax unit.
Weinstein alluded to that controversy when he introduced the film and joked that he and his brother were taking out a classified ad saying: "Two executives looking for company to run. Resumes on request." He added, "If any of you know anything, we will be outside waiting."
Moore won an Academy Award for his 2002 documentary, "Bowling for Columbine," about the Columbine High School massacre in Colorado and the ease with which one can buy a gun in the United States.
In his remarks on Tuesday, Moore predicted "Fahrenheit 9/11" will do three times as well as his Columbine movie, which earned a record amount for a documentary film, $21.5 million.
Moore told Reuters afterward that "Fahrenheit" would open in between 500 and 1,000 theaters on June 25, an amazingly high number for a documentary.
Like I said, I wish to God I had some clout in Hollywierd or some way to make a movie because I wouldn`t hesitate for a second making one called "Fat and Weight 911 pounds - The story of a hypocritical lying sack of puss"
It's time to boycott this hate-filled pig on FR. Without advertising (constant drumbeat of his hate speech) he's nothing.
These liberal/leftists/marxists are a lost cause and represent a 5th column and enemy abettors and suporters within our nation.
It's clear to me after viewing the funeral for President Reagan that the American people want a honest and sincere person in the White House. Someone that shares your hope for the future. What the American people don't want is some elitist telling them what to do with no hope for the future.
Well, the Weinsteins are big time FOBs.
God help us.
I pray that the grip of Hollywood and the elite NY media on this country and its culture will someday cease.
It is frightening what they are doing to the President and his mother and father. (not to mention the trash they have spewed on our culture for 40 yrs)
The left questions the Bush family's humanity, not just the Pres policies.
It must kill them inside, I don't know how they can take it.
Pray for the President and his family.
Be relentless in prayer for this country. And get out and work for our release from the left's grip on our schools, our religion, our politics, our culture, and our media.
Their monopoly on the country's perceptions and information must be destroyed.
"Well, the Weinsteins are big time FOBs."
And as we all know, an FOB = a POS.
Yesterday's unanimous vote for the President's Iraq resolution at the UN must have been cause for a few ulcers in Hollywierd.
Heh heh heh. Gee, wonder if Alexandra Kerry was at this slime fest?
"Moore told Reuters afterward that "Fahrenheit" would open in between 500 and 1,000 theaters on June 25, an amazingly high number for a documentary."
Even more amazing, it is called a "documentary." I would love to see Moore define "documentary." He claims to do comedy, and remarked that "accuracy is not required in comedy." (my paraphrase)
Amen!
I wouldn't worry about this guy. Just look at him. His blood type is Crisco. Guys that fat don't live past 45.
I wrote the following early yesterday morning.
My Prayer for the viewing, mourning and honoring of Ronald Reagan
Half of them do, so long as their gubmint checks show up on time.
Oh maaaan that is freggin` great!!! I hope to God it comes out the same time as that fat turds movie! Did you see the trailers? It seems to be more about him trying to interview the fat bastard than countering what the fat bastard spews but I could be wrong. I just hope he shows what a BS artist the fat bastard is.
i am so surprised [not] that his anti-Bush movie has raved reviews in Hollywood, gosh, i think this fat liar may actually win the next Nobel peace prize just like jimmuh did!
unlike moore, Bush is on a roll -- the un iraq resolution knocks the stuffing out of jf'nkerry's "losing the allies" bull****.
of course, his argument presupposed the notion that (smile-we-make-great-cheese-and-bidets) france and (smile-we-are-no-longer-nazis) germany are more important as allies than UK, Australia, Japan, Poland, and many others
since the iraq thing is QUICKLY playing out (and this movie opens 5 days before the handover), only the die-hard will see it.
and guess what? the money they spend on the ticket will be less money they could contribute to the demonrats!
HAAAAAHAAAAHAAAAA
"average American is finally beginning to figure it out"
Yes they are .. and after a week of revisiting the Reagan legacy, they're going to get it even more.
Unfortunately for Moore .. it will not be in his favor.
