2001 Mark Green Campaign Draws Prosecutor's Attention

By JONATHAN P. HICKS

The Brooklyn district attorney's office is investigating whether the 2001 mayoral campaign of Mark Green paid for a set of campaign fliers without properly reporting the expenditure, a law enforcement official said yesterday. The fliers and their origin became a major source of contention during that year's Democratic mayoral primary.

Specifically, the investigation is looking into whether the Thurgood Marshall Democratic Club, a political organization in Brooklyn that is controlled by Assemblyman Clarence Norman Jr., the Brooklyn Democratic Party chairman, paid for the fliers. The club was paid by the Green campaign to handle facets of the campaign in Brooklyn.

The anonymous fliers painted Mr. Green's opponent, Fernando Ferrer, then the Bronx borough president, as a puppet of the Rev. Al Sharpton. The accusation led to a serious rift in the Democratic Party after a runoff vote, which Mr. Green won. Mr. Ferrer gave him a lukewarm endorsement and then mostly stayed silent.

The emergence of the leaflets caused many of Mr. Ferrer's supporters to loudly denounce Mr. Green, the city's public advocate at the time, although he steadfastly denied responsibility. Mr. Green then lost to Michael R. Bloomberg, the Republican candidate. The Daily News first reported the investigation yesterday.

Richard D. Emery, a lawyer for Mr. Green, said yesterday that the investigation was looking at a host of questions related to campaign expenditures by Brooklyn political organizations in the 2001 campaign, but that he had been assured by the district attorney's office that it was not contemplating any action against Mr. Green.

"Everyone knows that Mark knew nothing about these fliers," Mr. Emery said.

Old news!

Norman is going to be in a nice, starched jumpsuit by the time we're treated to another insufferable Mark Green treatise on the evils of corporations/Republicans/non-Naderite forms of life.

""Everyone knows that Mark knew nothing about these fliers," Mr. Emery said."

NOT THE PROSECUTOR! :D

"Norman is going to be in a nice, starched jumpsuit by the time we're treated to another insufferable Mark Green treatise on the evils of corporations/Republicans/non-Naderite forms of life."

Green actually is a Nader buddy, he was one of Naders raiders in Public Citizen from 1970-1980. A total scumbag.

Hence, the joke: "non-Naderite forms of life."

Yet another wastrel who owes his career in "public" service-such as it is-to the mean, green soul-devouring machine.

What do you call a Mark Green victory speech?

I don't know. My imagination's not as vivid as yours.

Green, a loyal Democrat, disavowed Nader in 2000. Nader said during his presidential campaign that Green is his candidate to be the next mayor of New York City. Green's response was "The feeling isn't mutual.

The only difference is that at least Mark Green is relatively honest.

I don't think that there is an honest, genuine bone in John Kerry's feeble, fragile ossified shell of a body.
