Get/Give a Gmail invite Help the troops Help the Iraqi people |
What is this?
A site dedicated to getting Gmail invites for troops serving or about to be deployed to Iraq, Afganhistan or anywhere else far from the ones they love.
Why Gmail?
For the free storage. To you and me, the 4, 10 or even 100GB of other free email accounts means years of email, but if you are far away from home, that could be just a few dozen to a few hundred photos. Imagine having a new baby and having to delete early photos just to make room for new ones.
Another reason to use Gmail is the reliability. As a Gmail use who is sending and receiving an average of two hundred emails per day, I can testify that the system is easy to use, reliable and has a user interface that blows all the others away. Currently, while it's still in beta, the transfer rates are phenomenal. You can send files of approximately 8MB in size (they say 10, but you lose some for overhead).
Why should I give an invite code?
Because it will help someone stay in touch with friends and family while they risk their lives for you.
Who are you? A guy names Jim who thought this should be implemented as fast as possible
Where'd you get this idea?
From Wil Wheaton.
OK, how do I get started? Easy...you visit our message board.
What if I'm a military member and I would like a Gmail account? Same answer...you visit our message board. In the main forum you will find an announcment post that describes how the system will work.
Why does this site look like crap? Because I put it together in ten minutes. What's more important, how it looks or how it works?
I'll look through it later...thanks
This is neat, thank you! I forwarded it to my friends. Also my friend's brother will be going back to Iraq next week for the second time, he might like this :)
I think you site looks good, although I don't quite understand the system. Best of luck to you.
Do US troops in Iraq (or Afghanistan) have access to the web? I thought their Internet access was limited to email, so that the military can review content if need be.
By review content, I mean review outgoing emails so that military secrets aren't inadvertantly divulged.
There's quite a bit of controversy over that system.
Check out the Gmail is too creepy site.
I don't have a gmail account, but I have heard a lot of complaints from people who do. Stuff like 503 errors, site being down, not being able to login, etc.
I have a gmail account and have had no problems with it.
Have posted an offer with 5 Gmail invites, & already sent two. This is a great initiative! Gmail doesn't just have a lot of storage space, it's also got a very fast interface, meaning that soldiers in the field who have little shared computer time can read more emails faster.
Have you seen this yet?
