AQ agreed to leave Iraq alone too, in exchange for WMD training.

This according to a Clinton administration Justice Department indictment of OBL in 1998.

Also, I believe the co-chairs of the 9/11 Commission have mentioned this.

B-b-but ... the NY Times (the paper of record) says there was NO relationship between Iraq and al Qaeda.

Los Angeles Times via Seattle Times ^ | June 20, 2004 | Josh Meyer
WASHINGTON — The governments of Pakistan and Saudi Arabia helped set the stage for the Sept. 11 attacks by cutting deals with the Taliban and Osama bin Laden that allowed his al-Qaida terror network to flourish, according to several senior members of the Sept. 11 commission and U.S. counter-terrorism officials. The financial aid to the Taliban and other assistance by two of the most important U.S. allies in the U.S.-declared war on terrorism date at least to 1996 and appear to have helped immunize them from al-Qaida attacks within their own borders until long after the 2001 strikes, those officials...

Wonder exactly what was the "deal" the Clintons made with AQ and Saddam????? There has been nary a negative word to either in contrast to what they have been saying about President Bush "going this alone", with "window dressing".

I guess this puts the lie to the constant describing of terror as "shadowey" and "stateless". No state support=low level, minor grade tactics--nothing on the level of knocking down buildings.

But the alphabet soup claimed today that the 911 commission confirmed accusations that there's no Iraq al-Qaeda link, eh? HSRod posted this link on another thread:

press release: USA vs. OBL & Muhammad Atef

"In addition, al Qaeda reached an understanding with the Government of Iraq that al Qaeda would not work against that government and that on particular projects, specifically including weapons development, al Qaeda would work cooperatively with the Government of Iraq," the indictment said.
I found this with Google:

http://jya.com/usa-v-laden.htm, the indictment text, I think (or a related one).

B-b-but ... the Saudi and Pakistani connections are/were so much more obvious and odious.

He wasn't asleep -- the memos and indictments prove that.

He just didn't have the leadership skills to handle the implications. Looking back on the OKC bombing, it also makes me wonder if his administration's efforts to pin the Murrah attack left him painted into a corner on terrorism. Laurie Mylroie makes a great case for Iraq's involvement, and yet the administration successfully focussed America's attention on the whole American Christian right wing instead of Elohim's Arabist neo-Nazis who didn't know left from right.

Where could they go after that? The first WTC attacks should have been a giant clue of what was to come...

Steve Coll (of the Wash Post) documents in Ghost Wars that every time the CIA's OBL Task Force had him in their sights, the Reno DoJ would issue a new "authorization memo" that essentially said "You're on your own."

At no time did the Clinton WH or the Reno DoJ clearly accept or provide Executive Branch responsibility for the capture of OBL. They dithered and danced around petty legalities, and left field operators wondering what they should do, if anything.

For some reason, I find it painful to think about Reno saying that.

Kerrey said. "So we knew what was going on, but we did nothing."

Since it started in 1996 that would mean mostly the Clinton administration did nothing, as usual.

What the heck is Foxnews doing? Are they trying to subvert our war on terror? President Bush has both Pakistan & Saudi Arabia lined up & fighting on our side. And Fox brings up incident of ancient history, which will undoubtedly cause strain in our alliance with these front line Islamic states.

The press needs to exercise better judgement in time of war!

This is all documented in a Los Angeles Times front page story today, for the people who are good article posters and might want to link it.

While the media may want this to hurt Bush, it really wouldn't if he would stick to his doctrine. Now we have to see what the administration will do. The Saudis and Pakistanis have been caught openly aiding and protecting bin Laden and Al Qaeda. They need to be punished.

President Bush, this is what separates the men from the boys. I would rather go back to horse and carriage if need be, but let these nations know where we stand re terror, as you promised. Make good your word about harboring terrorists.

They are fighting on BOTH sides. That could be a problem...
