I am struck by the fact that this atrocity did NOT happen in Texas. Texas bashers please take note.
good question. I didn't read the whole story, but maybe there's some question about what happened.
In that case, though, I would have indicated this point by some other means than quotes. But then again, maybe that's tabloid style.
My point is that the use of "[sic]" means that the person is quoting the other source as it was written.
From what I have noticed, newspapers generally provide a physical description if the criminal is at-large - but not if he has already been arrested.
For example, in the same paper (NY Post), a rapist who had committed a series of rapes (and was still on the loose) was racially identified, along with his height, approximate weight, what he was wearing, etc.
That is to help us (the public) assist the police in their search.
