Why would the Post be implying that 'rape' is an incorrect usage of the word in this case?

good question. I didn't read the whole story, but maybe there's some question about what happened.

In that case, though, I would have indicated this point by some other means than quotes. But then again, maybe that's tabloid style.

My point is that the use of "[sic]" means that the person is quoting the other source as it was written.
