We're both guessing, then. I don't think that 'prolonging the agony' is part of the Islamic M.O., though. I can't think of a precedent for that. Which is why I mused that the hostage might be a collaborator, since there is a precedent for the jihadis holding off on that basis.

When you say they don't f around, what does this mean? (I need gory details)

The South Korean troops in Vietnam were known for their ambush skills and generally ruthless nature. They are also known in particular for wiping out an entire village (search: Binh Dinh). In an operation which ended much like the My Lai incident, SK troops surrounded a village and called out to all non-combatants to evacuate by a given time, or stay and be killed alongside the Viet Cong guerillas that had taken refuge in the village.

The deadline passed and the SK soldiers made good on their promise. Along with a few dozen VC, hundreds of villagers were killed. After word of that spread, guerillas in that area stopped hiding amongst villagers.

Too bad we couldn't have let those guys handle Fallujah, huh?

Good question. My cubemates aren't as familiar with the other Arab countries, but they seemed fairly sure that SA, Jordan, and Iran also teach English as a routine part of their public school curriculum. No idea about Kuwait, Syria, Turkey, Lebanon, or the Pali's.

"Yes, a a useful propaganda tool. Which could explain why he made his plea to his government in English." Fox is reporting this man was just beheaded. You're the only tool I see.

"If they haven't killed him, it leads me to believe the Korean may be a collaborator, like those three Japanese who were taken hostage a few months ago."

You owe this man's family an appology. He was just beheaded.

Creep.

After the jihadis get a taste of dealing with RoK soldiers, they'll probably wish the friendly Americans and British troops came back. RoK soldiers do not f**k around, and their ruthlessness is legendary in the many campaigns they've fought in. They are tough and hardcore, and with the advantage of relatively good gear and training thanks to the US -- a respectable force.

In Viet Nam, when the RoK soldiers were attacked by a communist insurgent, they didn't just kill the attackers, they killed everyone around them, man, woman, and child, under the presumption that the mere presence of communist guerilla meant tacit complicity by those who were around the communists (a very Asian perspective). According to an old Vietnamese immigrant commie-killer I know, many of the "attrocities" committed in Viet Nam were done by the RoK units deciding that a village was irreparably infested with communists and liquidating the lot.

In his opinion, the Iraqi terrorists were bloody stupid to antagonize the Koreans. I would agree with his assessment.

IF they don't want the troops out, what do they want?

More joy of beheading for their holy trill of it?

Again, you CAN NOT negociate with pure evil. You will only lose if you do. What happened here should clarify that they will do as they please anyway - murdering people for the hell of it.

"I guess Bush's tough on terrorists stance is working now isn't it."

But it is ... just watch and see.

Don't believe the liberal news. Things are going well over there.

It was a fair question. As we see now, it has been answered. So STFU with your self-righteous hindsight.

You Shut the f up! I didn't accuse a hostage of being a collaborator.

You had no reason to believe this man was anything more that a hostage other than he was a foreign national, and since he's Asian he must have the same motivations as the Japanese students.

If he had been an American you would not have said these things.
