ISLAMABAD, Pakistan (AP) -- Osama bin Laden, the Saudi millionaire accused by the United States of plotting bomb attacks on two U.S. embassies in Africa, has left Afghanistan, Afghan sources said Saturday.
Bin Laden's whereabouts were not known, said the sources who declined to be identified.
Taliban authorities in the militia's southern stronghold of Kandahar refused to either confirm or deny reports that bin Laden had left the country. The Taliban have called bin Laden their honored guest, a friend who helped the Afghan resistance fight invading Soviet soldiers in the 1980s.
The Taliban's ambassador in Islamabad, Saeed-ur-Rehman Haqqani, said he had not been told of bin Laden's departure, "but if it has happened, it will be a good thing."
Iraqi President Saddam Hussein has offered asylum to bin Laden, who openly supports Iraq against the Western powers.

There is no connection between Iraq and Al Quaida *bump*

You have earned FREEPER OF THE WEEK for finding this. :)

Hmmm, seems the AP has amneisa. Seems that the WORLD has amneisa!
AP must've been drunk or something when they posted it.
Thanks, but I am not done yet.

Maybe we can make a Goebbels' Pieces Prize or a Goebbels' ApPEACEment Prize
Did the Clinton administration make them cross their heart and hope to die?
You're on a mission and you're damn good at it.
great catch.
Send this to Al Gore.
.
1995 = CLINTON refused offer to bring OSAMA to us
1996 = CLINTON refused offer to bring OSAMA to us
2000 = CLINTON refused offer to bring OSAMA to us
...before OSAMA could hit us hard here at home after CLINTON left Office.
.
Facinating? Why did Bin Laden not accept this offer? Why did he turn down the protection and funding he likely would have recieved? Why did he turn down the opportunity to live virtually next door to his homeland and in the country with the second most sacred Islamic holy sites? Why did he choose to instead roam around the Afghan hinterland?
No dialysis care available in Iraq?

The AP doesn't provide in the story how they know Iraq offered asylum. It's a naked assertion.
"You have earned FREEPER OF THE WEEK for finding this. :)"
I second that.
You are en fuego!
Well, a few thoughts here...
The government of Sudan repeatedly tried to turn Osama over to the US but Clinton refused to take him. This led to Osama leaving for Afghanistan.
In Afghanistan Clinton launched a cruise missile strike greatly PO'ing the Taliban, and doing little else. After that point the Taliban refused to consider discussing a turn over. They were therefore a reliable base for Osama.
Moving to Iraq would move Osama into being an easier target for another attack seeing as we have bases in Turkey, Kuwait, and Saudi Arabia that we had used to attack Iraq in the past.
So, while the living standard would be higher, Osama was much safer in Afghanistan, and as we all know, they still allowed his minions to raise money for AQ in Saudi Arabia, so proximity was not an issue.

Thanks for digging this up.
This is especially important now, that Gore has the temerity to attack Bush, claiming that Bush made up the Al Qaeda-Iraq link.
AL GORE TO ACCUSE BUSH ADMINISTRATION OF INTENTIONAL DISTORTION ON IRAQ/AL QAEDA TIES

Several GREAT finds in this thread but why aren't the publications who broke the news (AP, NY Slimes, etc.,) being asked for an explanation since they now dispute any connection? This should also be shared with cable networks who are not afraid to touch it and members of the GOP with some spine. Shout it from the rooftops!
Thanks for the post. Have circulated.
bump for publicity
"The CIA has confirmed, in interviews with detainees and informants it finds highly credible, that al Qaeda's Number 2, Ayman al-Zawahiri, met with Iraqi intelligence in Baghdad in 1992 and 1998. More disturbing, according to an administration official familiar with briefings the CIA has given President Bush, the Agency has "irrefutable evidence" that the Iraqi regime paid Zawahiri $300,000 in 1998, around the time his Islamic Jihad was merging with al Qaeda."
But Saddam actually offering Bin Laden asylum tops it all.
I suppose the liberals will say that Bin Laden didn't accept, that proves that there is no link.
Very interesting.
Ditto!!!!
You been talking to Ambrose?
You're finding GOLD also.
GREAT DIGGING folks......bet the Dems are having CARDIACs about now....
