WASHINGTON (AP) -- Illinois Republican candidate Jack Ryan intends to abandon his Senate bid after four days spent trying to weather a political storm stirred by sex club allegations, GOP officials said Friday.

A formal announcement was expected within hours, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

Ryan conducted an overnight poll to gauge his support in the wake of the allegations made by his ex-wife in

Ryan's replacement would become an instant underdog

Even so, his chances will be better than Ryans.

Edgar has a real shot to win it if he will run.

Edgar has a real shot to win it if he will run.

I expressed that opinion and was promptly taken to task about Edgar being a "rino"

Sadly, you are correct. And I'm not sure any of the potential field can handle Obama. Sure, he's a hate-america dumbass, but we already have Durbin in office, and Moseley-Braun before him.

A pollster called my wife last night and rattled off a long list of potential replacements, asked for favorable/unfavorables on Bush and Kerry, all that jazz. Rambette told her that any Republican would get her vote before that creep Obama. I'd bet the GOP is hearing that from just about everybody with half a brain. She did recognize a couple of names as folks who gave Ryan flack about his divorce during the primary, and she commented that their behavior was a big negative in her mind.

This crap shouldn't matter, how many ex-spouses lie on somebody every year?

Pity. I had his chances at 7 of 9.

I'd back Edgar.

People also have to realize how bad Obama is. Bush put a stop to US tax dollars going to fund forced abortions in China, Obama calls that an assault on women's rights. Obama is practically Kucinich on foreign policy. We need to keep this guy out of the Senate, period. Besides, it's not like Edgar is Olympia Snowe or something.

In a liberal state like Illinois, you take what you can get. Edgar would be infinitely better than Obama even if he is a RINO. He would toe the party line on most issues.

Pity. I had his chances at 7 of 9.

My Republican congressman, Ray LaHood said that Ryan was runnig a stupid campaign by having his opponent stalked by a photographer detailing his every move.

Another negative for Ryan in my opinion is that his name is Ryan. In Illinois a lot of people associate him with the notorious former governor George Ryan.

http://www.usatoday.com/news/politicselections/state/2004-06-25-ryan_x.htm

"I told him that it troubled me greatly that so many party leaders who had no trouble stomaching years and years of corruption and insider deals and scandals under George Ryan were now lining up to throw stones at Jack (no relation to George Ryan)," Fitzgerald said.

"I think the public stoning of Jack Ryan is one of the most grotesque things I've seen in politics," he said.

I concur, and a lot of people of FR were chucking rocks right along with Ray LaHood.

Even if he were like Olympia Snowe...well, consider the alternative! I'd vote for an Olympia Snowe clone over a typical contemporary Democrat without a hint of hesitation.
