The REAL misery index hit record levels with the Peanut Man. It was the inflation rate, prime rate, and unemployment rate. It was between 40% and 45% towards the end of his term. I doubt the country could have withstood another 4 years of him.

It bothered me that former President Carter spoke at St. Olaf for the Nobel conference. He was smug, santimonious, and partisan. I never could stand that liberation theology nonsense.
This article explains some of the damage he has done, and continues to do. I had not heard the Mulroney or Mondale stories before.
