Islamic militants claim to have taken a US marine hostage in Iraq and are threatening to behead him, al-Jazeera television has reported. Footage aired on the channel showed a blindfolded man dressed in camouflage and holding a US marine ID card.
The card said the man's name was Wassef Ali Hassoun and he was on active duty. Islamist groups have falsely used military ID cards in the past and there has been no confirmation yet that any US forces are missing.
Al-Jazeera said the group called itself Islamic Response, the security wing of the 1920 Revolution Brigades, referring to the uprising against the British after World War I.
'Lured outside'
The group said it would will kill the man - said to be of Pakistani origin - if Iraqi prisoners are not released.
The militants claim they were able to abduct the man after infiltrating a US military camp and then luring him outside.
On Saturday, in another video broadcast by al-Jazeera, suspected supporters of al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi said they had taken three Turkish men captive in Iraq.
They threatened to behead the men unless all Turkish firms withdrew from Iraq within 72 hours.
Turkey has rejected the demand.
Zarqawi's movement has already claimed responsibility for the beheading of two other hostages captured in Iraq - US man Nick Berg and South Korean hostage Kim Sun-il.
I'm wondering why they didn't have him speak and say his own name. I'm still clinging to the hope that this isn't really a U.S. Marine.
Has this been confirmed by Pentagon/Centcom?

To bad we don't win the war and stop these Terriost. May God have mercy on this mans soul.
You wanna 'splain this?
This should narrow the search to make it easier for CentCom to do a head count.
We should hear from them shortly when the they get a full manning report from the field.
Cyborg ping.
'Course, if they behead him, the Marines will never take Moslem prisoners again. "Gee sir, they refused to surrender..."
Ahem, hello? Perhaps you aren't aware...we DID win the war.
In the aftermath of WWII, Hitler sympathizers were killing our soldiers too. But no one dared to suggest the war was still on.
The Hitler sympathizers favorite method of killing American and allied soldiers was decapitation. They used to string wire across the road and killed/decapitated any soldier who drove by. We solved that by putting a big wooden cross in the front of all jeeps.
As well, some soldiers were shot by sympathizers. The History Channel did a story on this some time ago. I wrote to the Library of Congress to find out how many American and allied soldiers were killed in Germany after the war, but they did not have those numbers astoundingly enough.
If indeed this is one of ours, and we do not move heaven and earth and be ready and willing to create a living hell if necessary, I fear we are lost. This, folks, is the final line in the sand.
I lift him up to God - may God have mercy on THEIR souls, for tihs boy is a Marine, and they will be sorry if they hurt him.
Hmmm can't compute
"No prisoners!"
And the Marines should not forget an "accident" which will knock Al-Jazeera off the air, for its eager purveying of the filth from these cowardly Muslims who hide behind masks, false names, and behind women and children. IMHO.

Yeah, it makes one wonder if this is truly an US Marine.
I don't quite get this part.
If this was my child, I would have to be put in a rubber room as I would be clinically insane at the thought of him being beheaded.
This should have been our objective since day one. I truly hope that this man is not murdered, but if he is, all hell should be unleashed.
It should have been unleashed a long time ago, IMO.
I don't know of Pentagon - but the FOXNEWS reports it too:
