As has been pointed out by many others, the only difference between Communism and National Socialism was the emphasis on world-wide class (proletariat) vs national interest.

Absent those distinctions, the motivation of both was to subsume the individual in favor of the state (ie 'common good'). In fact, Hayek noted that Nazis recruited heavily from Communist ranks since the basic principles of totalitarianism were already accepted.

Exactly. Tne irony of it was that the Nazis demanded ultimate power to deal with the communists when the two groups both believed in fundamentally the same things.

I'm a Hayek fan, too.
